The seeds of the shrub Bixa orellana are macerated with petroleum ether, the residue is dissolved in a 1:1 mixture of 70% alcohol and anhydrous acetone, and the solution is filtered until it becomes transparent. Solvent is then added to improve the stability of the resulting brownish-red dye.
