Pro-opiomelanocortin and ACTH–cortisol dissociation during pediatric cardiac surgery

open access: yesEndocrine Connections
In critically ill adults, high plasma cortisol in the face of low ACTH coincides with high pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) levels. Glucocorticoids further lower ACTH without affecting POMC.

TRP canonical 4 and/or 5 channel inhibition reduces aversion‐ and increases reward‐responding in chronically stressed mice

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Abstract Background and Purpose Pharmacological inhibition of TRPC4 and/or TRPC5 channels reduces Pavlovian aversion memory in stressed mice and reduces amygdala reactivity to aversion in humans with depression. The aims of this mouse study were to improve understanding of these anxiolytic processes, determine whether there are corrective effects on ...

Cortisol Regulates PD-1 and IL-12 in Canine Leishmaniasis. [PDF]

open access: yesParasite Immunol
ABSTRACT Canine visceral leishmaniasis (CanL) is a tropical zoonosis caused by Brazil's protozoan Leishmania (L.) infantum. Disorders in the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis have been reported in human and experimental visceral leishmaniasis, but not yet in canine leishmaniasis.

Clinical Practice Patterns in Bone Health Assessment and Management in Endogenous Cushing's Syndrome

open access: yesClinical Endocrinology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Skeletal fragility is a common complication of endogenous Cushing's Syndrome (CS), although specific guidelines for managing bone health are lacking. This study aimed to assess clinicians' current engagement with bone health assessment and management in patients with endogenous CS. Design Retrospective‐cohort design. Patients Seventy‐

Patients With Pituitary Neuroendocrine Tumours Requiring Neurosurgery –Who Is Referring Them?

open access: yesClinical Endocrinology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Patients living with pituitary neuroendocrine tumours (PitNETs) present with a spectrum of clinical manifestations and often follow a circuitous route to diagnosis, resulting in diagnostic delays. The objective of this study is to identify and report the various sources of referrals for patients who underwent pituitary resection for ...

ACTH Stimulation Testing Is Often Unnecessary After Appropriate Patient Preparation Prior to Screening Cortisol Measurement

open access: yesClinical Endocrinology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Context Screening morning serum cortisol is used to select patients for ACTH stimulation testing to diagnose adrenal insufficiency (AI) but may be affected by pre‐analytical factors. Careful consideration to discontinue confounding medications beforehand may preclude the need for subsequent stimulation testing.

Glucocorticoids and HPA axis regulation in the stress–obesity connection: A comprehensive overview of biological, physiological and behavioural dimensions

open access: yesClinical Obesity, Volume 15, Issue 2, April 2025.
Summary Chronic stress, characterized by increased long‐term exposure to the glucocorticoid hormone cortisol, is increasingly linked to obesity development. Still, various knowledge gaps persist, including on underlying pathophysiological mechanisms. The aim of the current review is to provide the latest insights on the connection between stress and ...
