Adherens junctions remain dynamic [PDF]

open access: yesBMC Biology, 2010
One of the four principal categories of cell-cell junctions that hold together and shape distinct tissues and organs in vertebrates, adherens junctions (AJs) form cell-cell contacts that connect transmembrane proteins with cytoskeletal actin filaments to provide architectural strength, aid in morphogenesis, and help to maintain proper tissue ...

Photoperiod-Dependent Effects of 4-tert-Octylphenol on Adherens and Gap Junction Proteins in Bank Vole Seminiferous Tubules

open access: yesInternational Journal of Endocrinology, 2013
In the present study we evaluated in vivo and in vitro effects of 4-tert-octylphenol (OP) on the expression and distribution of adherens and gap junction proteins, N-cadherin, β-catenin, and connexin 43 (Cx43), in testes of seasonally breeding rodents ...

Patterns in Space: Coordinating Adhesion and Actomyosin Contractility at E-cadherin Junctions

open access: yes, 2013
Cadherin adhesion receptors are fundamental determinants of tissue organization in health and disease. Increasingly, we have come to appreciate that classical cadherins exert their biological actions through active cooperation with the contractile actin ...

Trichostatin a restores expression of adherens and tight junction proteins during transforming growth factor β-mediated epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition

open access: yesJournal of Ophthalmic & Vision Research, 2018
Purpose: Adherens junctions and polarity markers play an important role in maintaining epithelial phenotype but get altered during the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Alterations of these markers during EMT of lens epithelial cell (LEC) can lead

Small and large intestine express a truncated Dab1 isoform that assembles in cell-cell junctions and co-localizes with proteins involved in endocytosis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Disabled-1 (Dab1) is an essential intracellular adaptor protein in the reelin pathway. Our previous studies in mice intestine showed that Dab1 transmits the reelin signal to cytosolic signalling pathways.

Adherens Junction: Molecular Architecture and Regulation [PDF]

open access: yesCold Spring Harbor Perspectives in Biology, 2009
The adherens junction (AJ) is an element of the cell-cell junction in which cadherin receptors bridge the neighboring plasma membranes via their homophilic interactions. Cadherins associate with cytoplasmic proteins, called catenins, which in turn bind to cytoskeletal components, such as actin filaments and microtubules.

Tissue‐Stimulator Platform for Electrically Stimulating Pancreatic β‐Cells for Long‐Term Functional Regulation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We present a tissue‐stimulator platform for seamless electrode integration with pancreatic tissue, applying uniform electrical stimulation through optimized design with biohybrid 3D printing. Advantageous effects of electrical stimulation on β‐cell function were observed, including enhanced calcium signaling, islet morphology, and maturation.

Myosin IIA-mediated forces regulate multicellular integrity during vascular sprouting [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Angiogenic sprouting is a critical process involved in vascular network formation within tissues. During sprouting, tip cells and ensuing stalk cells migrate collectively into the extracellular matrix while preserving cell-cell junctions, forming patent ...

Signaling from the Adherens Junction [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The cadherin/catenin complex organizes to form a structural Velcro that joins the cytoskeletal networks of adjacent cells. Functional loss of this complex arrests the development of normal tissue organization, and years of research have gone into teasing out how the physical structure of adhesions conveys information to the cell interior. Evidence that
