It has been proposed that cell-cell recognition occurs by means of local cell surface modulation of a small number of proteins rather than by expression of large numbers of different cell surface markers. Several different cell adhesion molecules (CAM's) have now been found in a number of vertebrate species in different tissues such as ...

Cell adhesion molecules and the kidney
Pediatric Nephrology, 1994Cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) have been implicated in various biologic processes, including morphogenesis, immune response, and thrombosis. There are four major groups: integrins, cadherins, immunoglobulin superfamily members, and selectins. Certain CAMs are differentially expressed in the developing, normal, and cancerous kidney.

Adhesion molecules in haemopoiesis.
Bailliere's clinical haematology, 1997In the adult mammal, haemopoiesis is restricted to the extravascular compartment of the bone marrow (BM) where primitive haemopoietic stem cells (HSC) and their clonogenic progeny develop in intimate contiguity with a heterogeneous population of stromal cells that comprise the haemopoietic micro-environment (HM).

This book covers the structure and classification of adhesion molecules in relation to signaling pathways and gene expression. It discusses immunohistochemical localization, neutrophil migration, and junctional, functional, and inflammatory adhesion molecules in pathologies such as leukocyte decompression sickness and ischemia reperfusion injury ...

Phagocytosis by specialized cells was, expressed in evolutionary terms, one of the first defense strategies of organisms in order to eliminate foreign materials. Migration of professional phagocytic cells to a lesion thus represents one of the most basic aspects of host defense.
