Igniting adipocyte thermogenesis
Cell, 2022Maintenance of body temperature is intimately tied to energy expenditure and body weight regulation. In this issue of Cell, Li, Wang, et al. discovered that localized hyperthermia induces the thermogenic program to increase energy expenditure and decrease body weight in mice and humans.

Our understanding of adipocyte development has advanced rapidly over the last ten years. New developments in adipocyte methodologies have allowed rapid progress. Both histochemical and ultrastructural evaluation of normal and abnormal adipocyte development has increased our understanding of the complexities of cell proliferation and differentiation and

White adipocytes play a key role in maintaining whole body energy homeostasis by forming white adipose tissue (WAT). The impairment of WAT formation or WAT dysfunction is clearly associated with severe metabolic disorders. Mature adipocytes are derived from differentiated preadipocytes and are pivotal in energy storage and metabolism.

There are several preadipocyte cell lines reported, but in this chapter, we will describe mainly the 3T3-L1 cells, which are best characterized and widely used for molecular biological studies. The 3T3-L1 cells were clonally isolated by Green and Kehinde from 3T3-Swiss albino.

Adipocytes are lipid-rich parenchymal cells contained in a very plastic organ, whose composition can undergo striking physiologic changes. In standard conditions the organ contains white and brown adipocytes which play opposite roles: lipid storage to meet metabolic requirements and lipid burning for thermogenesis, respectively.

Abstract The origin of fat cells has been the subject of continuous debate. It was first suggested that the adipocyte was derived from an undifferentiated mesenchymal cell, a cell that besides giving rise to the adipocyte can also give rise to endothelium, and pericytes, 1,2 fibroblasts, chondroblasts, and osteoblasts, as well as mast cells and the ...

Adipocyte Mineralocorticoid Receptor
2019Mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) has been recently identified in adipose tissue, where its excessive activation contributes to several metabolic derangements often observed in obesity and metabolic syndrome. Recent findings support the existence of a bidirectional cross-talk between adipose tissue and adrenal glands, contributing to obesity-related ...

Understanding Adipocyte Differentiation
Physiological Reviews, 1998Gregoire, Francine M., Cynthia M. Smas, and Hei Sook Sul. Understanding Adipocyte Differentiation. Physiol. Rev. 78: 783–809, 1998. — The adipocyte plays a critical role in energy balance. Adipose tissue growth involves an increase in adipocyte size and the formation of new adipocytes from precursor cells.
