From Regenerative to Degenerative Niche: Multicellular Crosstalk and Population Dynamics in Skeletal Muscle Aging

open access: yesAging Cell, Volume 25, Issue 10, October 2026.
Aging transforms the skeletal muscle microenvironment from a balanced, regenerative niche into a maladaptive, degenerative state. This review highlights how disrupted multicellular crosstalk drives chronic inflammation, fibrosis, and neuromuscular dysfunction, ultimately compromising tissue repair and fueling sarcopenia.

Lipoedema and Obesity Misclassification: A Phenotype Based Approach to Cardiometabolic Risk Beyond Body Mass Index

open access: yesClinical Obesity, Volume 16, Issue 5, October 2026.
Clinical recognition of the lipoedema phenotype and principal differential diagnoses. ABSTRACT Lipoedema is a painful adipose tissue disorder marked by disproportionate limb fat and often misclassified as generalized obesity or lymphoedema. This review examines its metabolic phenotype and implications for cardiometabolic assessment and management ...

Refining the Genetic Contribution to Type 2 Diabetes Subtypes

open access: yesDiabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, Volume 28, Issue 10, Page 9450-9460, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a complex and highly heterogeneous disease driven in part by genetic predisposition and can be stratified into clinical subgroups to aid disease management. We recently grouped T2D subjects in the Qatar Biobank (QBB) cohort into Severe Insulin‐Deficient Diabetes (SIDD), Severe Insulin‐Resistant Diabetes ...

The mediating role of genes in the influence of intestinal flora on type 2 diabetes and the screening of diagnostic markers

open access: yesJournal of Diabetes Investigation, Volume 17, Issue 10, Page 1816-1834, October 2026.
Using Mendelian randomization, TWAS/eQTL analysis, machine learning, and single‐cell RNA sequencing, this study identified gut microbiota taxa causally linked to type 2 diabetes, candidate mediator genes, and diagnostic markers (BEND7, BLVRA, C1orf85, and LAMC1).

Beyond Deterministic Fetal Programming: Intrauterine Exposures and the Multifactorial Origins of Adiposity

open access: yesObesity Reviews, Volume 27, Issue 10, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Excess adiposity is not a recently developed problem but has existed since at least the upper Paleolithic, allowing evolutionary selection pressures to adapt the physiology of the pregnant woman and the feto‐placental unit for maternal and fetal protection.
