Mechanisms of Action of Adjuvants [PDF]
Adjuvants are used in many vaccines, but their mechanisms of action are not fully understood. Studies from the past decade on adjuvant mechanisms are slowly revealing the secrets of adjuvant activity. In this review, we have summarized the recent progress in our understanding of the mechanisms of action of adjuvants.

Induction of immune responses following oral immunization is frequently dependent upon the co-administration of appropriate adjuvants that can initiate and support the transition from innate to adaptive immunity. The three bacterial products with the greatest potential to function as mucosal adjuvants are the ADP-ribosylating enterotoxins (cholera ...

In summary, HIV vaccine studies described have generally not been designed to measure the effect of the adjuvant or to make comparisons between adjuvants. In only one study was a head-to-head comparison made between HIV antigen alone and antigen formulated with different adjuvants. We hope that future experiments with HIV/SIV vaccine candidates will be

Five-year survival rates for patients with early-stage non-small cell lung cancer have room for improvement. Adjuvant chemotherapy results in a small but significant increase in overall survival at 5 years. Efforts to improve outcomes by intensifying adjuvant treatment, utilizing cancer-specific vaccines or tyrosine kinase inhibitors in unselected ...

Adjuvant activity of incomplete Freund's adjuvant
Advanced Drug Delivery Reviews, 1998The water-in-oil emulsion adjuvants developed by Jules Freund and coworkers have been, and continue to be, used in research and veterinary vaccines. Incomplete Freund's Adjuvant (IFA) has also been widely tested in humans where it was shown to augment antibody responses greater than other adjuvants, such as alum, and to be well tolerated.
