Genomics clarifies taxonomic boundaries in a difficult species complex. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Efforts to taxonomically delineate species are often confounded with conflicting information and subjective interpretation. Advances in genomic methods have resulted in a new approach to taxonomic identification that stands to greatly reduce much of this

Bistable Mechanisms 3D Printing for Mechanically Programmable Vibration Control

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work introduces a 3D‐printed bistable mechanism integrated into tuned mass dampers (TMDs) for mechanically adaptive passive vibration suppression. Through optimized geometry, the bistable design provides adaptable vibration reduction across a broad range of scenarios, achieving effective vibration mitigation without complex controls or external ...

Dual adaptive strategies in Candida glabrata under tunicamycin stress: petite mutations and chromosome C aneuploidy drive transient drug resistance

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology
BackgroundCandida glabrata is an opportunistic fungal pathogen known for its ability to rapidly develop resistance to antifungal agents. Tunicamycin (TUN), an inhibitor of N-linked glycosylation, induces Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) stress, but the ...

Polymorphism analysis of the CTLA-4 gene in paracoccidioidomycosis patients

open access: yesMemorias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, 2011
The CTLA-4 protein is expressed in activated T cells and plays an essential role in the immune response through its regulatory effect on T cell activation.

Local Ancestry to Identify Selection in Response to Trypanosome Infection in Baoulé x Zebu Crossbred Cattle in Burkina Faso

open access: yesFrontiers in Genetics, 2021
The genomes of crossbred (admixed) individuals are a mosaic of ancestral haplotypes formed by recombination in each generation. The proportion of these ancestral haplotypes in certain genomic regions can be responsible for either susceptibility or ...

Dipole-dipole induced global motion of Rydberg-dressed atom clouds

open access: yes, 2014
We consider two clouds of ground state alkali atoms in two distinct hyperfine ground states. Each level is far off-resonantly coupled to a Rydberg state, which leads to dressed ground states with a weak admixture of the Rydberg state properties.

The Complex Demographic History and Evolutionary Origin of the Western Honey Bee, Apis Mellifera. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The western honey bee, Apis mellifera, provides critical pollination services to agricultural crops worldwide. However, despite substantial interest and prior investigation, the early evolution and subsequent diversification of this important pollinator ...

Enhancing Corrosion Resistance and Mechanical Strength of 3D‐Printed Iron Polylactic Acid for Marine Applications via Laser Surface Texturing

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Laser surface texturing significantly improves the corrosion resistance and mechanical strength of 3D‐printed iron polylactic acid (Ir‐PLA) for marine applications. Optimal laser parameters reduce corrosion by 80% and enhance tensile strength by 25% and ductility by 15%.

Human-Mediated Gene Flow Contributes to Metapopulation Genetic Structure of the Pathogenic Fungus Alternaria alternata from Potato

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2018
Metapopulation structure generated by recurrent extinctions and recolonizations plays an important role in the evolution of species but is rarely considered in agricultural systems. In this study, generation and mechanism of metapopulation structure were
