Taking AIM2 at atherosclerotic plaques

Nature Reviews Drug Discovery, 2021
Clonal haematopoiesis — an expansion of blood cell clones due to advantageous somatic mutations — is linked to myocardial infarction. A new study shows that activation of the AIM2 inflammasome in clonally expanded macrophages exacerbates atherosclerosis by driving both proliferation and pyroptosis.

Neutrophil extracellular traps promote keratinocyte inflammation via AIM2 inflammasome and AIM2‐XIAP in psoriasis

Experimental Dermatology, 2022
AbstractThe infiltration of neutrophils in the epidermis and the release of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are important events in the pathogenesis of psoriasis, but the regulatory roles and internal mechanism of NETs in psoriasis are largely unknown.

HPV16 activates the AIM2 inflammasome in keratinocytes

Archives of Dermatological Research, 2013
Human papillomaviruses (HPV) are double-stranded DNA viruses, which selectively infect keratinocytes in stratified epithelia. After an initial infection, many patients clear HPV. In some patients, however, HPV persist, and dysfunctional innate immune responses to HPV infection could be involved in the ineffective clearing of these viruses.

AIM2 Inflammasome Assembly and Signaling

2019
AIM2 (absent in melanoma 2) is a cytoplasmic sensor of double-stranded DNA from pathogens or damaged cellular organelles. It recruits ASC (apoptosis-associated specklike protein containing a CARD) and caspase-1 to form the AIM2 inflammasome, activate caspase-1, and elicit inflammatory responses via cytokine maturation and pyroptotic cell death ...
