Water permeability in human airway epithelium

Pflügers Archiv - European Journal of Physiology, 2005
Osmotic water permeability (P(f)) was studied in spheroid-shaped human airway epithelia explants derived from nasal polyps by the use of a new improved tissue collection and isolation procedure. The fluid-filled spheroids were lined with a single cell layer with the ciliated apical cell membrane facing the outside.

[Regeneration of injured airway epithelium].

Annales pharmaceutiques francaises, 2006
The airway surface epithelium is frequently injured by microorganisms and viruses due to its permanent contact with the external medium. Following injury, the epithelium is able to repair itself and regenerate through several mechanisms including spreading and migration of basal cells, cell proliferation and differentiation.

[Regeneration of airway epithelium].

Revue des maladies respiratoires, 2014
Epithelial regeneration is a complex process. It can lead to the remodeling of the airway epithelium as in asthma, COPD or cystic fibrosis. The development of in vivo and in vitro models has allowed the analysis of remodeling mechanisms and showed the role of components of extracellular matrix, proteases, cytokines and growth factors.

Innate Immune Functions of the Airway Epithelium

2008
The epithelium of the respiratory tract forms a large surface area that maintains intimate contact with the environment. Through the act of breathing, this mucosal surface encounters an array of pathogens and toxic particulates. In response to these challenges many strategies have evolved to protect the host.
