Emergencies in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

open access: yesMuscle &Nerve, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Emergencies are frequent in people living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (pALS), especially as the disease progresses, and can necessitate urgent evaluation and intervention. Progressive weakness in ALS inevitably increases fall risk, making discussion of fall prevention strategies integral to caring for pALS.

A Sedation Protocol for Endoscopic Baton‐Plate Adjustment in Neonates With Pierre Robin Sequence

open access: yesPediatric Anesthesia, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Robin sequence (RS) is characterized by upper airway obstruction leading to life‐threatening desaturations in neonates. Procedural sedation in this population presents unique challenges due to anatomical airway anomalies, young patient age, and associated comorbidities.

Continuous Respiratory Oscillometry in Pediatric Laparoscopic Surgery—The COMET Study

open access: yesPediatric Anesthesia, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Laparoscopic appendectomy is the accepted surgical approach for appendicitis in centers worldwide. Laparoscopic surgery requires the creation of a pneumoperitoneum to facilitate surgical access. Laparoscopic surgery affects the respiratory mechanics of patients under general anesthesia.

Role of Fetoscopic Airway Evaluation Immediately Preceding EXIT Procedure in Fetuses With Suspected Airway Obstruction

open access: yesPrenatal Diagnosis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective This study describes the role of pre‐EXIT (Ex Utero Intrapartum Treatment) fetoscopic airway evaluation in fetuses with suspected airway obstruction. Methods Single center, retrospective, observational study including fetuses with suspected airway obstruction undergoing fetoscopic airway evaluation prior to EXIT between 2013 and 2025.

Weaning from Venovenous Mode Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation in Coronavirus Disease 2019-Related Respiratory Distress Syndrome

open access: yesJournal of Medical Sciences
The coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) has caused a worldwide pandemic. Approximately 5% of victims develop severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and some require extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).

Airway pressure release ventilation (APRV) for the treatment of severe life-threatening hypoxia in ARDS patients

open access: yesمجله دانشگاه علوم پزشکی گرگان, 2014
Airway pressure release ventilation (APRV) is a new mode of ventilation. APRV is used in the acute respiratory distress syndrome when the low tidal volume strategy was not responding to assisted controlled mandatory ventilation (ACMV).

Strategies to prevent ventilator-associated lung injury in critically Ill patients

open access: yesIndian Journal of Respiratory Care, 2018
Life-saving mechanical ventilation (MV) induces or exacerbates a range of pulmonary pathologies, collectively known as ventilator-induced lung injury if there is evidence of direct causation (i.e., in the research laboratory).

Emphysema in an 11‐month‐old boy with alpha‐1 antitrypsin deficiency

open access: yesPediatric Investigation, EarlyView.
Pediatric development of emphysema in Alpha‐1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (A1ATD) has been rarely described. In this case report, we document an 11‐month boy with A1ATD phenotype PiZZ with basilar centrilobular emphysema, the earliest such documented case.

Predictability of obstructive sleep apnea with a somesthetic screening score: Development and preliminary validation in a prospective study

open access: yesSleep Research, EarlyView.
This prospective study developed a two‐step clinical scoring system for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) screening based on patients’ somesthetic perception of oropharyngeal airflow. The Intermediate Score (IS ≥ 7.5) achieved 73% sensitivity and 77% specificity (AUC = 0.7754; OR = 8.96).

Adapted APRV settings to enhance carbon dioxide clearance in acute hypercapnic respiratory failure

open access: yesThe Egyptian Journal of Bronchology
Background Although airway pressure release ventilation (APRV) has been extensively studied for hypoxemic respiratory failure, its efficacy in acute hypercapnic respiratory failure is not well established.
