Autocrine regulation of asthmatic airway inflammation: role of airway smooth muscle

open access: yesRespiratory Research, 2001
Chronic airway inflammation is one of the main features of asthma. Release of mediators from infiltrating inflammatory cells in the airway mucosa has been proposed to contribute directly or indirectly to changes in airway structure and function.

Regulation of Myosin Light-Chain Phosphatase Activity to Generate Airway Smooth Muscle Hypercontractility

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2020
Smooth muscle is a central structure involved in the regulation of airway tone. In addition, it plays an important role in the development of some pathologies generated by alterations in contraction, such as hypercontractility and the airway ...

Curvature‐Directed Elongation and Chiral Tilting Drive Asymmetric Tissue Patterning

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Curvature and cell handedness together break tissue symmetry. On convex and concave surfaces, cells elongate along opposite geometric axes and tilt in a consistent chirality‐driven direction, yielding opposite alignment patterns from the same cells. Reversing intrinsic cell chirality reverses both.

Dexmedetomidine’s inhibitory effects on acetylcholine release from cholinergic nerves in guinea pig trachea: a mechanism that accounts for its clinical benefit during airway irritation

open access: yesBMC Anesthesiology, 2017
Background Airway instrumentation can evoke upper airway reflexes including bronchoconstriction and cough which can cause serious complications including airway trauma, laryngospasm or bronchospasm which may in turn lead to difficulty with ventilation ...

Changes of smooth muscle contractile filaments in small bowel atresia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
AIM: To investigate morphological changes of intestinal smooth muscle contractile fibres in small bowel atresia patients. METHODS: Resected small bowel specimens from small bowel atresia patients (n = 12) were divided into three sections (proximal ...

Vine‐Inspired Soft Robotics: Materials, Actuations, and Emerging Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Vine‐inspired robots grow from the tip, enabling navigation through confined spaces with minimal disturbance. This Review summarizes material and actuation strategies for vine‐inspired growth, key functions including steering, retraction, attachment, branching, and variable stiffness, and emerging applications spanning medical intervention, confined ...

Lactate Signal: Modulator of Cellular Energy Production and Anabolism

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Compartmentalized lactate signaling provides a spatial framework for understanding how lactate‐rich states are generated, transported, sensed, and translated into biological outputs. This Review integrates extracellular, cytosolic, mitochondrial‐associated, and nuclear lactate mechanisms to explain how lactate shapes metabolic adaptation, immune ...

The effects of nifedipine on respiratory mechanics investigated by theend-inflation occlusion method in the rat

open access: yesJournal of Enzyme Inhibition and Medicinal Chemistry, 2017
Context: Calcium channel blockers may theoretically exhibit relaxing effects not only on vascular smooth muscle but also on airway smooth muscle. Objective: To investigate possible effects of nifedipine on respiratory mechanics in the rat.

Follistatin like-1 (Fstl1) is required for the normal formation of lung airway and vascular smooth muscle at birth. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2017
Fstl1, a secreted protein of the BMP antagonist class, has been implicated in the regulation of lung development and alveolar maturation. Here we generated a Fstl1-lacZ reporter mouse line as well as a Fstl1 knockout allele. We localized Fstl1 transcript
