Observation of bi-directional global Alfvén eigenmodes in the MAST-U tokamak

open access: yesNuclear Fusion
The first observations and classification of deuterium beam-driven sub-cyclotron frequency range Alfvén eigenmodes (AEs) are presented for the MAST-Upgrade tokamak. Sets of observed eigenmodes are separated in frequency by approximately 200 kHz.

Magneto-acoustic waves in a gravitationally stratified magnetized plasma: eigen-solutions and their applications to the solar atmosphere [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Magneto-acoustic gravity (MAG) waves have been studied intensively in the context of astrophysical plasmas. There are three popular choices of analytic modeling using a Cartesian coordinate system: a magnetic field parallel, perpendicular, or at an angle

Characteristics of the Alfvénic activity during the current quench in ASDEX Upgrade

open access: yesNuclear Fusion
ASDEX Upgrade has developed multiple massive gas injection (MGI) scenarios to investigate runaway electron (RE) dynamics. During the current quench of the MGI induced disruptions, Alfvénic activity is observed in the 300–800 kHz range. With the help of a

A model for Alfvén-eigenmode-induced transport of fast ions in stellarators

open access: yesNuclear Fusion
A novel model for Alfvén-eigenmode-induced transport of fast ions in stellarators is introduced. A variety of reduced transport models exists for tokamaks, but nothing comparable currently exists for stellarators.

Hybrid kinetic-MHD modeling of alpha-driven TAEs in the SPARC tokamak

open access: yesNuclear Fusion
As the magnetic confinement fusion community prepares for the next generation of fusion devices and burning plasmas, there is still a question of whether fast ions (FIs) will drive MHD instabilities, causing significant redistribution or even loss of FIs,

Development of slow and fast wave coupling and heating from the C-Stellarator to NSTX

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2017
A historical perspective on key discoveries which contributed to understanding the properties of coupling both slow and fast waves and the effects on plasma heating and current drive will be presented.

Damped transverse oscillations of interacting coronal loops

open access: yes, 2015
Damped transverse oscillations of magnetic loops are routinely observed in the solar corona. This phenomenon is interpreted as standing kink magnetohydrodynamic waves, which are damped by resonant absorption owing to plasma inhomogeneity across the ...

Overview of fast particle experiments in the first MAST Upgrade experimental campaigns

open access: yesNuclear Fusion
MAST-U is equipped with on-axis and off-axis neutral beam injectors (NBI), and these external sources of super-Alfvénic deuterium fast-ions provide opportunities for studying a wide range of phenomena relevant to the physics of alpha-particles in burning
