The disposition of allyl isothiocyanate in the rat and mouse
Food and Chemical Toxicology, 1997The urine was the major route of excretion of radioactivity (50-80% of dose) following the oral administration (2.5 and 25 mg/kg body weight) of allyl[14C]isothiocyanate (AITC) to male and female Fischer 344 rats and B6C3F1 mice. Smaller amounts were found in the faeces (6-12%) and expired air (3-7%).

The bactericidal effects of allyl isothiocyanate in water
Environmental Technology, 2012This study investigated the potential application of allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) for the disinfection of water by examining the bactericidal effects of this compound against inoculated Escherichia coli in autoclaved, de-chlorinated tap water and against the natural microbiota (heterotrophic plate count bacteria, HPCs) in a surface water. Bacteriostatic

Allyl isothiocyanate is mutagenic in Salmonella typhimurium
Mutation Research/Genetic Toxicology, 1985Allyl isothiocyanate, a naturally occurring compound, component of oil of mustard and human food plants such as cabbage, cauliflower and horseradish, has up to now been regarded as nonmutagenic in bacterial mutagenicity testing systems. Recently, however, it was found to cause transitional-cell papillomas in the urinary bladder of male F344 rats ...

Genotoxic effects of allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) and phenethyl isothiocyanate (PEITC)
Chemico-Biological Interactions, 2000Two isothiocyanates (ITCs) commonly found in human diet, allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) and phenethyl isothiocyanate (PEITC), were tested for genotoxic effects in a battery of assays: Salmonella/microsome assay with TA 98 and TA 100, differential DNA repair assay with E. coli and micronucleus (MN) induction assay with human derived Hep G2 cells. Albeit to

Two experiments were conducted with allyl isothiocyanate (AITC): one in vitro, to investigate the chemical binding of AITC with thyroxine (T4), tyrosine (Tyr), and leucine (Leu), and the other in vivo, to evaluate the effect of AITC on the blood clotting mechanism and on the protein and lipid contents of rat liver.

Colorimetric Determination of Allyl Isothiocyanate
Analytical Letters, 1983Abstract A simple and accurate colorimetric method for determination of allyl isothiocyanate was developed. It involves formation of methylene blue by the reaction of an acid solution of N, N-dimethyl-p-phenylenediamine in the presence of ferric ion with the sulfide liberated by ethanolic base hydrolysis of allyl isothiocyanate in xylene.

Conformations and vibrational spectra of allyl isocyanate and allyl isothiocyanate
Journal of Molecular Structure, 1974Abstract The infrared spectra of allyl isocyanate and allyl isothiocyanate as vapours and liquids were recorded in the region 4000-50 cm−1. Additional spectra of the amorphous and crystalline solids at −180°C were recorded between 4000 and 400 cm−1.

Inhibitory Effect of Allyl Isothiocyanate on Platelet Aggregation
Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 2014Allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) is one of the major components of mustard. The present study for the first time attempted to evaluate the effect of AITC on platelet aggregation. In the in vitro study using platelet-rich plasma (PRP) from rats and humans, AITC at concentrations of 100 and 300 μM significantly inhibited platelet aggregation induced by ...

Thermal Degradation of Allyl Isothiocyanate in Aqueous Solution
Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 1998Allyl isothiocyanate in an aqueous solution was heated and refluxed at 100 degrees C for 1 h. The reaction mixtures were then extracted with methylene chloride and analyzed using gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS).

Allyl isothiocyanate sensitizes TRPV1 to heat stimulation
Pflügers Archiv - European Journal of Physiology, 2013The powerful plant-derived irritant allyl isothiocyanate (AITC, aka mustard oil) induces hyperalgesia to heat in rodents and humans through mechanisms that are not yet fully understood. It is generally believed that AITC activates the broadly tuned chemosensory cation channel transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily A member 1 (TRPA1 ...
