Arthritis Associated with Alphavirus Infections: Chikungunya

2019
Since 2004, the epidemic of alphavirus, mainly chikungunya viral (CHIKV) infection, has spread throughout the world and will continue to produce outbreaks due to viral mutations and the spread caused by travelers visiting endemic areas.

Defective particles in alphavirus infections.

Medical biology, 1976
This article summarizes our studies with defective-interfering particles of Sindbis virus obtained by high multiplicity passaging of the virus in BHK cells. Cells infected with these defective passages accumulate a species of RNA (20S) at the expense of 26S RNA--the mRNA coding for the viral structural proteins.

REGULATORS OF APOPTOSIS ON THE ROAD TO PERSISTENT ALPHAVIRUS INFECTION

Annual Review of Microbiology, 1997
▪ Abstract  Alphavirus infection can trigger the host cell to activate its genetically programmed cell death pathway, leading to the morphological features of apoptosis. The ability to activate this death pathway is dependent on both viral and cellular determinants. The more virulent strains of alphavirus induce apoptosis with increased efficiency both

Arthritis Associated with Alphavirus Infections: Dengue and Zika

2019
Dengue virus (DENV) and Zika virus (ZIKV) are a cause of significant morbidity and mortality worldwide within specific regions of the world where they are endemic and susceptible to the occurrence of epidemics. The interaction between these viruses and other host factors (especially the immunocompetence) seems to influence the expression and severity ...

Age-dependent susceptibility to fatal encephalitis: alphavirus infection of neurons

1994
Sindbis virus encephalitis in mice provides a model for studying age-dependent susceptibility to acute viral encephalitis. The AR339 strain of SV causes fatal encephalitis in newborn mice, but weanling mice recover uneventfully. Increased virulence for older mice is associated with a single amino acid change from Gln to His at position 55 of the E2 ...
