The alternative pathway of complement and the thrombotic microangiopathies
Transfusion and Apheresis Science, 2016Thrombotic microangiopathies (TMA) are disorders defined by microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, non-immune thrombocytopenia and have multi-organ involvement including the kidneys, brain, gastrointestinal, respiratory tract and skin. Emerging evidence points to the central role of complement dysregulation in leading to microvascular endothelial injury ...

Alternative pathway of complement in multiple myeloma
American Journal of Hematology, 1981AbstractThe alternative pathway of complement was studied in 16 newly diagnosed and 2 previously treated patients with multiple myeloma. Functional activity of this pathway was abnormal in 10 of these 18 patients (55%). These abnormalities correlated with depressed levels of alternative pathway components in 3 of 10 patients, but in the remaining 7, no

[The alternative complement pathway].
Pathologie-biologie, 1984The alternative complement pathway comprises three component proteins C3, B, D and three regulatory proteins P, H and I. These plasma proteins represent the major humoral defense mechanism against infection in a non-immune host. The following topics are reviewed: biochemistry of the alternative pathway proteins; molecular mechanisms of activation and ...

Activation of the Alternative Complement Pathway by Torulopsis Glabrata
Scandinavian Journal of Infectious Diseases, 1979Torulopsis glabrata is a yeast-like fungus with increasing importance as an opportunistic human pathogen. The role of serum complement in resistance to this infection was studied by chemotactic and opsonic assays. The results indicate that T. glabrata activates complement via the alternative pathway.

Regulation of the alternative pathway of human complement by C1q
Molecular Immunology, 1987The interaction of C1q with C3b and its effect on C3b activities in the alternative pathway of complement (APC) have been studied. Purified C1q markedly inhibited C3b deposition on and lysis of rabbit erythrocytes by the isolated cytolytic APC. It also blocked formation of the C3 convertase, C3b, Bb as well as binding of Factors B and H to sheep ...

Polyions regulate the alternative amplification pathway of complement
Immunopharmacology, 1983Polyanion has previously been shown to inhibit generation of amplification pathway convertase of complement and to inhibit H-mediated decay of this complex. Polycations, protamine sulfate, and poly-l-lysine (PLL) were examined in this study for direct effects on alternative amplification pathway mechanisms and for ability to regulate polyanion-induced ...

A defect of the alternative pathway of complement.
Clinical and experimental immunology, 1977The sera of patients defective at opsonization for yeast phagocytosis fix haemolytic complement poorly following incubation with the alternative pathway complement activators, inulin and bacterial endotoxin. This suggests that the defect lies early in the alternative pathway of complement.

The spectrum of complement alternative pathway‐mediated diseases
Immunological Reviews, 2008Summary: The complement system has once again come into prominence in the therapeutic development arena. The recent approval of an inhibitory monoclonal antibody, eculizumab, which is directed against complement component C5 for the disease paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria has provided the initial validation of this system as a therapeutic target ...
