The role of alternative oxidase in plant hypersensitive response.

Plant biology, 2021
The innate immune system of plants is very crucial in defining the fate of a plant cell during plant pathogen interactions. This response is often accompanied by a hypersensitive reaction leading to the death of a plant cell and restricted pathogen ...

Alternative Oxidase Is Positive for Plant Performance.

Trends in Plant Science, 2018
The alternative pathway of mitochondrial electron transport, which terminates in the alternative oxidase (AOX), uncouples oxidation of substrate from mitochondrial ATP production, yet plant performance is improved under adverse growth conditions. AOX is regulated at different levels.

Alternative oxidase expression in Neurospora crassa

Fungal Genetics and Biology, 2003
When electron flow through the cytochrome-mediated electron transport chain is blocked by inhibitors or mutations, the mitochondria of Neurospora crassa contain a KCN-insensitive alternative oxidase, encoded by the aod-1 gene, that transfers electrons directly from the ubiquinone pool to oxygen.

ALTERNATIVE OXIDASE: From Gene to Function

Annual Review of Plant Physiology and Plant Molecular Biology, 1997
▪ Abstract  Plants, some fungi, and protists contain a cyanide-resistant, alternative mitochondrial respiratory pathway. This pathway branches at the ubiquinone pool and consists of an alternative oxidase encoded by the nuclear gene Aox1. Alternative pathway respiration is only linked to proton translocation at Complex 1 (NADH dehydrogenase ...

Prokaryotic orthologues of mitochondrial alternative oxidase and plastid terminal oxidase

Plant Molecular Biology, 2003
The mitochondrial alternative oxidase (AOX) and the plastid terminal oxidase (PTOX) are two similar members of the membrane-bound diiron carboxylate group of proteins. AOX is a ubiquinol oxidase present in all higher plants, as well as some algae, fungi, and protists. It may serve to dampen reactive oxygen species generation by the respiratory electron

Alternative NAD(P)H dehydrogenase and alternative oxidase: Proposed physiological roles in animals.

open access: yesMitochondrion, 2018
The electron transport systems in mitochondria of many organisms contain alternative respiratory enzymes distinct from those of the canonical respiratory system depicted in textbooks. Two of these enzymes, the alternative NADH dehydrogenase and the alternative oxidase, were of interest to a limited circle of researchers until they were envisioned as ...

Trypanosome alternative oxidase: from molecule to function

Trends in Parasitology, 2006
Trypanosome alternative oxidase (TAO) is the cytochrome-independent terminal oxidase of the mitochondrial electron transport chain. TAO is a diiron protein that transfers electrons from ubiquinol to oxygen, reducing the oxygen to water. The mammalian bloodstream forms of Trypanosoma brucei depend solely on TAO for respiration.

The alternative oxidase of Candida parapsilosis

European Journal of Biochemistry, 1986
The yeast Candida parapsilosis is able to grow on a glycerol medium, supplemented with antimycin A, due to a secondary mitochondrial pathway, able to reoxidize specifically cytoplasmic NADH. It is antimycin‐A‐insensitive, but inhibited by salicylhydroxamic acid and high cyanide concentrations.

Regulation of alternative oxidase gene expression in soybean

Plant Molecular Biology, 2002
Soybean (Glycine max cv. Stevens) suspension cells were used to investigate the expression of the alternative oxidase (Aox) multigene family. Suspension cells displayed very high rates of cyanide-insensitive respiration, but Aox3 was the only isoform detected in untreated cells. Incubation with antimycin A, citrate, salicylic acid or at low temperature

Alternative Oxidase Promotes Biofilm Formation of Candida albicans

Current Medical Science, 2018
This study was designed to analyze the effect of the mitochondrial respiratory pathways of Candida albicans (C. albicans) on the biofilm formation. The 2, 3-bis (2-methoxy- 4-nitro-5-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium-5-carboxanilide (XTT) reduction assay was used to measure the metabolic activities of biofilms formed by the C. albicans which were cultured in
