Type 2 diabetes mellitus and cerebrospinal fluid Alzheimer's disease biomarker amyloid β1‐42 in Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative participants

open access: yes, 2017
Introduction Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) amyloid β (Aβ) 1-42 is an important Alzheimer's disease biomarker.

Flash Assembloids: A Rapid Biofabrication of a Platform for Modeling Early Glioblastoma Invasion at the Glioblastoma–Brain Organoid Interfaces

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents a bioengineered assembloid (ASM) system combining glioblastoma (GBM) cells in oxidized alginate (OA) microgels with dorsal organoids (DOs). This model simulates brain tumor‐host interactions, revealing enhanced GBM invasion, altered gene expression, and aggressive infiltration patterns, demonstrating ASM as a valuable platform for ...

A Long‐Lived Human Neurovascular PENTA Culture Model Captures Incomplete Vascular Repair and Glia‐Associated Signaling After Traumatic Brain Injury

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
A long‐lived, five‐cell‐type human neurovascular (PENTA) model recreates vascular disorganization and incomplete repair after traumatic brain injury (TBI). By integrating endothelial, glial, neuronal, and immune components within a 3D scaffold, the platform enables time‐resolved analysis of neurovascular remodeling and provides a human‐relevant system ...

Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy in Bionanotechnology: Current Advances and Future Perspectives

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) enables the nanoscale mapping of electrostatic surface potentials. While widely applied in materials science, its use in biological systems remains emerging. This review presents recent advances in KPFM applied to biological samples and provides a critical perspective on current limitations and future directions for

Semantic intrusion errors differentiate between amnestic MCI who are plasma p-tau217+ from p-tau217- after adjusting for initial learning strength

open access: yesFrontiers in Neurology
BackgroundSemantic intrusion errors (SIEs) are associated with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) due to Alzheimer's disease (AD). It is unknown whether accounting for maximum learning capacity still leads to an increase in SIEs when elevated plasma p ...

Bias‐Field Free Single‐Frequency CW‐ODMR of Nitrogen‐Vacancy Centers in Diamond for the Detection of Transient Electrical Signals

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Simplified quantum sensing technique for the detection of short electrical signals occurring in neuronal signaling or bioinspired technologies. We demonstrate a single frequency continuous‐wave optically detected magnetic resonance (CW‐ODMR) approach to sense signals that can be as short as 0.2 ms.

Cerebrospinal Fluid Markers of Alzheimer's Disease Pathology and Microglial Activation are Associated with Altered White Matter Microstructure in Asymptomatic Adults at Risk for Alzheimer's Disease

open access: yes, 2016
The immune response in Alzheimer's disease (AD) involves activation of microglia which may remove amyloid-β (Aβ). However, overproduction of inflammatory compounds may exacerbate neural damage in AD.

Developing a Functional Polyelectrolyte Hybrid Layer Scaffold Coating and Evaluation of Its Performance for Interaction With Neural Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Polyelectrolyte scaffold coatings modified with Cu and Fe3O4 nanoparticles regulate neural stem cell behavior in vitro. Increased Fe3O4 content enhances mitochondrial activity and neuronal differentiation, whereas higher Cu levels reduce cell viability.

Associations between APOE‐TOMM40 ‘523 haplotypes and limbic system white matter microstructure

open access: yesAlzheimer’s & Dementia: Diagnosis, Assessment & Disease Monitoring
INTRODUCTION We assessed associations between apolipoprotein E Translocase of Outer Mitochondrial Membrane 40 (APOE‐TOMM40)‐‘523 haplotypes and white matter microstructure (WMM) across limbic tracts important for memory and cognition in non‐Hispanic ...
