Ecology, Genetic Diversity, and Phylogeographic Structure of Andes Virus in Humans and Rodents in Chile [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Virology, 2009
ABSTRACT Andes virus (ANDV) is the predominant etiologic agent of hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS) in southern South America. In Chile, serologically confirmed human hantavirus infections have occurred throughout a wide latitudinal distribution extending from the regions of Valparaíso (32 to 33°S) to Aysén (46°S) in ...

Development of a lentiviral vector system to study the role of the Andes virus glycoproteins

open access: yesVirus Research, 2010
To infect target cells, enveloped viruses use their virion surface proteins to direct cell attachment and subsequent entry via virus-cell membrane fusion. How hantaviruses enter cells has been largely unexplored. To study early steps of Andes virus (ANDV) cell infection, a lentiviral vector system was developed based on a Simian immunodeficiency virus (

Is quinoa‐farming sustainable in marginal environments? Social, economical and environmental aspects

open access: yesJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, EarlyView.
Abstract Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) is an Andean grain crop introduced as a novel crop to many parts of the world in recent years. Recognized for nutritious seeds and high abiotic stress tolerance, it has been promoted as an element of climate‐resilient agriculture, particularly in marginal environments.

Engaging the public in plant science: Communication facilitators and barriers of scaling up a citizen science campaign

open access: yesPeople and Nature, EarlyView.
Abstract Volunteers have been involved in nature observations for decades through citizen science initiatives, providing large data sets as well as problem identification that allow a more complete understanding of many natural phenomena. Although communication is a core component in citizen science, the key factors that determine its effectiveness in ...

Andes Virus Antigens Are Shed in Urine of Patients with Acute Hantavirus Cardiopulmonary Syndrome [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Virology, 2009
ABSTRACTHantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS) is a highly pathogenic emerging disease (40% case fatality rate) caused by New World hantaviruses. Hantavirus infections are transmitted to humans mainly by inhalation of virus-contaminated aerosol particles of rodent excreta and secretions. At present, there are no antiviral drugs or immunotherapeutic

Hantavirus Prevalence in the IX Region of Chile

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2003
An epidemiologic and seroprevalence survey was conducted (n=830) to assess proportion of persons exposed to hantavirus in IX Region Chile, which accounts for 25% of reported cases of hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome.

Beyond the Kidney and Lung: Cutaneous and Mucosal Clues to Human Hantavirus Disease

open access: yesInternational Journal of Dermatology, EarlyView.
Rodent exposure and aerosolized excreta can lead to hantavirus infection with systemic endothelial injury and capillary leak, resulting in thrombocytopenia and syndromes such as HPS/HCPS and HFRS/NE. Early dermatologic and mucosal findings, including flushing, conjunctival injection, petechiae/purpura, and mucosal bleeding, may provide important clues ...

Es werde Licht! Licht als Antrieb und Regulator in synthetischen Zellen

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, Volume 138, Issue 24, 8 June 2026.

Arracacha virus A, a newly recognised virus infecting arracacha (Arracacia xanthorrhiza; Umbelliferae) in the Peruvian Andes

open access: yesAnnals of Applied Biology, 1978
SUMMARYArracacha virus A (AVA), a previously undescribed virus, is common in arracacha (Arracacia xanthorrhiza; Umbelliferae) in the Huanuco region of the Peruvian Andes. AVA was not transmitted by Myzus persicae, but was transmitted by inoculation of sap to 38 species from 10 families out of 63 species from 12 families tested.
