Angiopoietin-like protein 8: a multifaceted protein instrumental in regulating triglyceride metabolism

Current Opinion in Lipidology, 2023
Purpose of review The angiopoietin-like (ANGPTL) proteins ANGPTL3 and ANGPTL4 are critical lipoprotein lipase (LPL) inhibitors. This review discusses the unique ability of the insulin-responsive protein ANGPTL8 to regulate triglyceride (TG) metabolism by forming ANGPTL3/8 and ANGPTL4/8 complexes that control tissue-specific LPL

Plasma insulin is required for the increase in plasma angiopoietin‐like protein 8 in response to nutrient ingestion

Diabetes/Metabolism Research and Reviews, 2023
Abstract Background Plasma levels of angiopoietin‐like protein 8 (ANGPTL8) are regulated by feeding and they increase following glucose ingestion. Because both plasma glucose and insulin increase following food ingestion, we aimed to determine whether the increase in plasma insulin and glucose ...

Inhibition of Angiopoietin-Like Protein 3 or 3/8 Complex and ApoC-III in Severe Hypertriglyceridemia

Current Atherosclerosis Reports, 2023
The role of the inhibition of ANGPTL3 in severe or refractory hypercholesterolemia is well documented, less in severe hyperTG. This review focuses on the preclinical and clinical development of ApoC-III inhibitors and ANGPTL3, 4, and 3/8 complex inhibitors for the treatment of severe or refractory forms of hypertriglyceridemia to prevent cardiovascular

Increased angiopoietin-like protein 8 levels in patients with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease

Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice, 2016
In the present study, we recruited 124 patients with type 2 diabetes, among which 22 had a history of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The study demonstrated that compared with type 2 diabetes without CVD, those with CVD had remarkably higher levels of angiopoietin-like protein 8 (ANGPTL8).

The Angiopoietin-Like Protein 3 and 8 Complex Interacts with Lipoprotein Lipase and Induces LPL Cleavage

ACS Chemical Biology, 2021
Lipoprotein lipase (LPL) is the key enzyme that hydrolyzes triglycerides from triglyceride-rich lipoproteins. Angiopoietin-like proteins (ANGPTL) 3, 4, and 8 are well-characterized protein inhibitors of LPL. ANGPTL8 forms a complex with ANGPTL3, and the complex is a potent endogenous inhibitor of LPL.

Expression of angiopoietin-like protein 8 correlates with VEGF in patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy

Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology, 2017
To investigate the vitreous and serum levels of angiopoietin-like protein 8 (ANGPTL-8) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). The serum levels of these factors were also analyzed in patients with diabetes and no diabetic retinopathy (NDR) and with non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy ...

Evaluation of serum Angiopoietin-like protein 2 (ANGPTL-2), Angiopoietin-like protein 8 (ANGPTL-8), and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels in patients with gestational diabetes mellitus and normoglycemic pregnant women

The Journal of Maternal-Fetal & Neonatal Medicine, 2021
In the present study, we aimed to investigate the role of the fasting serum levels of Anjiopoetın 2 - like protein (ANGPTL2), Anjiopoetın 8-like protein (ANGPTL8), and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) in the etiopathogenesis of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), and analyze the relationships between insulin resistance parameters. The 90 ...

Serum betatrophin/angiopoietin-like protein 8 (ANGPTL8) levels in pregnancies affected by hyperemesis gravidarum

European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Biology, 2018
The association between serum betatrophin levels and hyperemesis gravidarum (HEG) remains unknown. The aim of this study was to determine and understand the alterations in serum betatrophin levels in pregnancies complicated by HEG compared with unaffected normal pregnancies.A cohort study was carried out to evaluate serum betatrophin levels in patients

Angiopoietin-like protein 8: An attractive biomarker for the evaluation of subjects with insulin resistance and related disorders

Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice, 2017
Insulin resistance is prevalent worldwide and is associated with many metabolic diseases, in particular, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), obesity, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and metabolic syndrome (MetS).

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SERUM ANGIOPOIETIN-LIKE PROTEIN 8 LEVELS AND HYPERTENSION STAGES

Kocatepe Tıp Dergisi
OBJECTIVE: Hypertension is a serious condition that can lead to serious complications. Currently, there is no standard biomarker used in clinical practice to diagnose hypertension and stage the disease. The aim of this study was to investigate whether serum levels of angiopoietin-like protein 8 (sANGPTL8) change in hypertensive patients and advanced ...
