HPLC as a replacement for the animal response assays for insulin

Journal of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analysis, 1986
The work describes the assay of the potency of insulin (drug substance) and its formulations by gradient elution reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The methods are shown to differentiate between insulins of bovine, porcine and human sequence, and to be both reproducible and stability-indicating.

Replacing experiments on laboratory animals

Trends in Biochemical Sciences, 1986
There is great scope for overcoming the moral dilemma inherent in experiments using live animals by reducing the numbers of animals required, minimizing any suffering caused, and, in many cases, replacing them altogether through the development, validation and application of alternative methods.

In-vitro techniques: can they replace animal testing?*

Human Reproduction, 1986
In-vitro tests for the long-term safety evaluation of drugs offer certain advantages. Specific properties of drugs can be identified including mutagenic and carcinogenic effects. The mechanisms leading to toxicity can be assessed. Tissue from several species, including man, can be examined.

Advances in total joint replacement in small animals

Journal of Small Animal Practice, 2012
Total joint replacement is now considered a routine surgical option for small animals with advanced joint disease. This review highlights the current state of the art in total hip, elbow and knee replacement in small animals, as well as the potential for application to other joints such as the intervertebral discs, hock and shoulder.
