Free Convection of a Bingham Fluid in a Differentially-Heated Porous Cavity: The Effect of a Square Grid Microstructure

open access: yesPhysics, 2022
We examine how a square-grid microstructure affects the manner in which a Bingham fluid is convected in a sidewall-heated rectangular porous cavity. When the porous microstructure is isotropic, flow arises only when the Darcy–Rayleigh number is higher ...

Value of MRI Outcomes for Preventive and Early‐Stage Trials in Spinocerebellar Ataxias 1 and 3

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective To examine the value of MRI outcomes as endpoints for preventive and early‐stage trials of two polyglutamine spinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs). Methods A cohort of 100 participants (23 SCA1, 63 SCA3, median Scale for the Assessment and Rating of Ataxia (SARA) score = 5, 42% preataxic, and 14 gene‐negative controls) was scanned at 3T up ...

Constitutive modeling of the anisotropic behavior of Mullins softened filled rubbers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Original constitutive modeling is proposed for filled rubber materials in order to capture the anisotropic softened behavior induced by general non-proportional pre-loading histo-ries.

Anisotropic mechanical properties and cushioning effectiveness of spruce subjected to different direction loading

open access: yesMaterials Research Express
The arrayed microstructure of wood produced during growth results in anisotropic mechanical behavior at the macroscopic level. In order to assess the cushioning effectiveness of spruce, the microstructural models with regular hexagonal array cells along ...

The effect of a hypocycloid irregularity on torsional surface waves in a multilayer system [PDF]

open access: yesTheoretical and Applied Mechanics
The present topic is devoted to investigating the effects of semi four-cusped hypocycloid irregularity on torsional surface waves in an initially stressed anisotropic porous medium situated between two anisotropic nonhomogeneous semi-infinite spaces. The

Separable Anisotropic Diffusion

open access: yesInternational Journal of Computer Vision, 2018
Anisotropic diffusion has many applications in image processing, but the high computational cost usually requires accuracy trade-offs in order to grant its applicability in practical problems. This is specially true when dealing with 3D images, where anisotropic diffusion should be able to provide interesting results for many applications, but the ...

Paramagnetic Rim Lesions Are Associated With Trans‐Synaptic Degeneration of the Visual Pathway in Multiple Sclerosis

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives Retrograde trans‐synaptic degeneration (rTSD) from posterior visual pathway lesions in multiple sclerosis (MS) is characterized by hemi‐macular ganglion cell‐inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) thinning and contralateral visual field loss.

Normal‐Appearing White Matter Injury Mediates Chronic Deep Venous Hypoxia and Disease Progression in Multiple Sclerosis

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective To explore how cerebral hypoxia and Normal‐Appearing White Matter (NAWM) integrity affect MS lesion burden and clinical course. Methods Seventy‐nine MS patients, including 13 clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) patients and 66 relapsing–remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) patients, and 44 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited from ...

Hardy spaces associated with some anisotropic mixed-norm Herz spaces and their applications

open access: yesOpen Mathematics, 2023
In this article, we introduce anisotropic mixed-norm Herz spaces K˙q→,a→α,p(Rn){\dot{K}}_{\overrightarrow{q},\overrightarrow{a}}^{\alpha ,p}\left({{\mathbb{R}}}^{n}) and Kq→,a→α,p(Rn){K}_{\overrightarrow{q},\overrightarrow{a}}^{\alpha ,p}\left({{\mathbb ...

A Depolarizing Leak in Sodium Bicarbonate Cotransporter NBCe1 Causes Brain Edema

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives SLC4A4 encodes electrogenic sodium bicarbonate cotransporter NBCe1, prominently expressed in kidney and brain. Recessive loss‐of‐function variants in SLC4A4 cause proximal renal tubular acidosis, no brain edema. In the brain, NBCe1 is expressed by astrocytes, where it regulates pH and mediates astrocyte volume changes.
