Effect of povidone iodine, chlorhexidine digluconate and toyocamycin on amphizoic amoebic strains, infectious agents of Acanthamoeba keratitis – a growing threat to human health worldwide

open access: yesAnnals of Agricultural and Environmental Medicine, 2018
Introduction Free-living amoebae, ubiquitous in outer environments, in predisposing circumstances may exist as parasites, infectious agents of Acanthamoeba keratitis.

Repurposing in vitro approaches for screening anti-parasitic drugs against the brain-eating amoeba Naegleria fowleri

open access: yesInternational Journal for Parasitology: Drugs and Drug Resistance, 2021
Naegleria fowleri is both a pathogenic and a free-living microbial eukaryote, responsible for the development of primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) in humans.

IL‐33/ST2 Signaling Sustains Hepato‐Intestinal Homeostasis by Orchestrating Vascular Surveillance and Immune Regulatory Circuits During Experimental Trypanosoma cruzi Infection

open access: yesThe FASEB Journal, Volume 40, Issue 13, 15 July 2026.
Impairment of hepato‐intestinal homeostasis triggered by ST2 deficiency during T. cruzi infection. Within the splenic compartment, immune dysregulation is marked by a robust pro‐inflammatory polarization of the T‐cell landscape. In the liver, ST2 deficiency is associated with hepatocellular injury, increased parasite burden, and hyperalbuminemia ...

Mesalazine‐Induced Myocarditis: A Challenging Diagnostic Journey

open access: yesClinical Case Reports, Volume 14, Issue 7, July 2026.
Cardiac MRI imaging showing patterns consistent with acute myocarditis. ABSTRACT Mesalazine‐induced myocarditis, though rare, should be suspected in patients presenting with acute chest pain and elevated cardiac biomarkers shortly after treatment initiation. Cardiac MRI plays a pivotal role in diagnosis. Prompt drug discontinuation often leads to rapid

Effectiveness of Polyclonal Antibody Immunoconjugate Treatment with Propamidine Isethionate for Amoebic Keratitis in Golden Hamsters

open access: yesJournal of Parasitology Research, 2023
Acanthamoeba griffini is known to cause amoebic keratitis (AK); its main causes are inadequate hygiene when contact lenses are handled and/or its prolonged use at night, as well as the use of contact lenses during underwater activities.

An Atypical Aquaporin 1 Derived From Paramecium multimicronucleatum Functions as a Multifunctional Channel That Permeates Water, Glycerol, and Urea

open access: yesJournal of Eukaryotic Microbiology, Volume 73, Issue 4, July/August 2026.
ABSTRACT Although it had been reported that the translation product of the functional aquaporin gene, aqp1, is localized to the contractile vacuole complex of Paramecium multimicronucleatum, the molecules that pass through this channel protein had not been identified. In the present study, we introduced and expressed this protein in Xenopus oocytes and

Polyphosphates Attenuate Interleukin‐12 Production in Macrophages Infected With Legionella pneumophila

open access: yesThe FASEB Journal, Volume 40, Issue 11, 15 June 2026.
Legionella pneumophila infection leads to the release of pathogen‐associated molecular patterns, which recruits the adaptor protein MYD88, initiating both activating (e.g., NF‐κB) and inhibitory (e.g., PI3K/AKT) signaling pathways that regulate IL‐12 gene expression.

Wave Mechanics of Ciliary Proteins: Quantum‐Enabled Sensing and Energy Transfer in the “Cellular Antenna”

open access: yesAggregate, Volume 7, Issue 6, June 2026.
This review surveys eukaryotic cilia as putative quantum‐enabled sensory and regulatory centers. It highlights their multifaceted roles in the cell, focuses on the nontrivial roles of quantum mechanics in their membrane and cytoskeletal proteins, and introduces the essential building blocks enabling quantum properties to survive in the warm, wet, and ...

Exploring Floristic Diversity and Medicinal Plant Uses in Venda, Limpopo, South Africa

open access: yesFeddes Repertorium, Volume 137, Issue 2, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Plants have been an important source of medicine for thousands of years. To better understand the current diversity and usage of medicinal plants, floristic studies are essential. This report documents an expedition conducted in the Venda region of Limpopo, South Africa. The study was carried out in Shanzha and surrounding villages, as well as

Toward Efficient Cellulosic Biomass Breakdown: Enzymatic Innovation and Kinetic Insights

open access: yesMacromolecular Materials and Engineering, Volume 311, Issue 6, June 2026.
By combining a processive GH7, CBM2a, and GH3 into single enzyme, the GCG fusion protein effectively breaks down crystalline cellulose. This tri‐domain architecture reduces cellobiose inhibition at the cellulose surface allowing for the simultaneous targeting of the substrate, depolymerization, and removal of products.
