Anti-asthmatic properties of anti-snake-venom serum

Summary In a controlled (but not blind) trial anti-snake-venom serum alleviated asthma in 45 out of 60 cases. In 34 cases success was obtained within 3 to 8 days and in the remaining 11 cases in 2 to 6 weeks. The period during which the patients remained free from asthmatic attacks varied from 1 to 12 months.

Polyvalent Anti-snake Venom (ASV) is a life-saving antivenin for severe envenomation due to snake bite in India. ASV infusion is occasionally associated with severe allergic reactions, i.e. anaphylaxis and death. We report a rare instance of non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema due to ASV infusion in an eleven years old boy.
