High sporulation and overexpression of virulence factors in biofilms and reduced susceptibility to vancomycin and linezolid in recurrent Clostridium [Clostridioides] difficile infection isolates [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Clostridium [Clostridioides] difficile infection (CDI) is one of the leading causes of diarrhea associated with medical care worldwide, and up to 60% of patients with CDI can develop a recurrent infection (R-CDI). A multi-species microbiota biofilm model

Combinatorial Synthesis of Next Generation Water‐Soluble Quaternized N‐Halamine Oligomers with Long‐Lasting Antiviral Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A combinatorial library of dual‐functional antiviral oligomers incorporating N‐halamine and quaternary ammonium functionalities is developed for long‐lasting antiviral activity. The lead materials exhibit rapid and durable antiviral activity against SARS‐CoV‐2 variants and influenza H1N1, with 4 to 5 log reduction in viral copies at 5 mg mL−1 ...

Phenotypic and genotypic characterisation of Neisseria gohorrhoeae isolates from New Zealand with reduced susceptibility to ceftriaxone : a thesis submitted to the College of Health in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Master of Science in Microbiology at Massey University, New Zealand [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Objectives Currently, ceftriaxone is the last remaining drug recommended for empirical treatment of gonorrhoea. Neisseria gonorrhoeae with reduced susceptibility to ceftriaxone have been isolated worldwide in countries such as Japan, France, Spain ...

Antimicrobial susceptibilities of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae [PDF]

open access: yesAntimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, 1990
The in vitro susceptibilities of 10 isolates of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae to 16 antimicrobial agents were determined. Penicillin and imipenem were the most active agents, followed by piperacillin, cefotaxime, ciprofloxacin, pefloxacin, and clindamycin. Some resistance was observed with erythromycin, tetracycline, and chloramphenicol.

Host‐Directed Biomaterials for Combatting Bloodstream Infections: From Macrocyclic Peptides to Immune‐Activating Cell Backpacks

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bloodstream infections (BSI) are one of the leading causes of mortality and morbidity in both civilian and military populations. This paper summarizes recent progress in novel treatment strategies to manage BSI arising from both bacterial and fungal pathogens using molecules, particles, and materials to elicit host‐directed immunity.

Antimicrobial susceptibility patterns and empirical prescribing practices in adult in patients with urinary tract infection: is there a need for changing clinical practices?

open access: yesSri Lankan Journal of Infectious Diseases, 2014
Introduction: Knowledge of local antimicrobial susceptibility is essential for prudent empiric therapy for urinary tract infection (UTI).The aim of this study was to describe antimicrobial susceptibility patterns and empirical prescribing practices in ...

A Ten-Year Retrospective Survey of Antimicrobial Susceptibility Patterns among Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica Serovar Typhi Isolates in Ontario, Canada

open access: yesMicrobiology Spectrum, 2023
The epidemiology and treatment of typhoid fever are complicated by the emergence and spread of Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhi lineages with resistance to many antimicrobial agents critical for therapy.

Determination of antimicrobial susceptibilities on infected urines without isolation [PDF]

open access: yes, 1979
A method is described for the quick determination of the susceptibilities of various unidentified bacteria contained in an aqueous physiological fluid sample, particularly urine, to one or more antibiotics.
