Antioxidant capacity of the neurohormone melatonin

Journal of Neural Transmission, 2005
The aim of this study was to elucidate the antioxidant behaviour of melatonin (M) and determine its activity-structure relationship. M or 5-metoxy-N acetyltriptamine is a neurohormone secreted by the pineal gland, which plays a proven role in maintaining sleep-wake rhythms.

Antioxidant Capacity of Food

Free Radicals and Antioxidants, 2016
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are usually produced by the living cell and have different functions in its normal activity. However, if they are produced excessively, or if the system that keeps them in controlled levels is deficient or insufficient, a phenomenon known as oxidative stress is produced.

Interaction between antioxidants in assays of total antioxidant capacity

Food and Chemical Toxicology, 2008
Sub-additivity of antioxidant activities in assays of total antioxidant capacity has been reported previously and ascribed to binding of low-molecular weight antioxidants such as flavonoids by proteins. We demonstrate that this phenomenon is much more common and concerns also interactions between typical low-molecular weight oxidants in the assays of ...

Total urine antioxidant capacity

Clinica Chimica Acta, 2001
Total antioxidant capacity has been determined for several body fluids and provides a convenient means to compare antioxidant defenses among patients with acute or chronic inflammatory illnesses. We have studied urine specimens from a control group and a variety of patients with hypertension and acute and chronic renal diseases using an ABTS ...

Antioxidant Capacity of Hops

2009
Beer is a polyphenol-rich beverage that has recently been reported to reduce the incidence of coronary heart disease and cancer. Some of the mechanisms by which this effect occurs have already been elucidated and include antioxidant, antiinflammatory, antimutagenic, antiangiogenic, estrogen-interfering, and cell cycle regulating actions of its phenolic

Kinetic analysis of antioxidant capacity of wine

BioFactors, 1999
AbstractA competition kinetics procedure for measuring total antioxidant capacity in wine is described. This procedure is based on the “crocin bleaching test” (Bors et al. Biochim. Biophys. Acta 1984, 796:, 312–319) as modified for analyzing the antioxidant capacity of complex mixtures (Tubaro et al. J. Am.

Assessment of Antioxidant Capacity in vitro and in vivo

Free Radical Biology and Medicine, 2010
The role and beneficial effects of antioxidants against various disorders and diseases induced by oxidative stress have received much attention. Many types of antioxidants with different functions play their role in the defense network in vivo. The free radical scavenging antioxidants are one of the important classes of antioxidants and the assessment ...

Total antioxidant capacity in patients with varicoceles

Fertility and Sterility, 2003
To explore a possible molecular defect linked to infertility, studying total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of seminal plasma in varicocele (VAR).Case-series study.Volunteers in an academic research environment and out-patients in clinical service.Twenty-five VAR patients (9 oligospermic and 16 normospermic) vs 24 non-VAR controls (7 subjects with ...

Antioxidant capacity of lycopene-containing foods

International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition, 2001
Increased consumption of tomatoes and tomato products has been associated with decreased cancer risks. One fat-soluble compound identified in tomatoes which may be responsible for this association is lycopene. There may, however, be other antioxidants present in tomato-based foods, and total antioxidant capacity may be another way to rate the health ...

Antioxidant capacity in severely burned patients

Pathologie Biologie, 2001
Total antioxidant capacity (TAC) was measured after severe burns (non-electric with one exception) in two groups of patients: group A, 24 subjects (19 men and five women) 20-67 years old and group B, eight subjects (six men and two women) 20-54 years old, admitted to the Major Burns Unit of hospital general Vall d'Hebron over a period of nine months ...
