[Antioxidants in liver protection].

Orvosi hetilap, 2004
Great importance has been attributed to antioxidants in the prevention and treatment of conditions associated with oxidative stress for many years. At the same time the antioxidants are free radicals themselves, and they can exert prooxidant activity depending on the concentration.

Toxic and Protective Effects of Antioxidants in Biomembranes

1986
Natural and synthetic antioxidants (AOs) are widely used as stabilizers of biomembranes against lipid peroxidation (LPO). Natural AOs (tocopherols, ubiquinols) containing hydrocarbon "tails" do not disturb the membrane lipid bilayer. Synthetic AOs devoid of hydrocarbon radicals may perturb the lipid bilayer.

Antioxidants and antioxidant enzymes protect against pulmonary oxygen toxicity in the rabbit

Journal of Applied Physiology, 1990
Two major lines of defense exist against oxidant lung injury: tissue antioxidants and antioxidant enzymes. We studied pretreatment with the antioxidants, vitamin E and butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), and the antioxidant enzymes, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase, in rabbits exposed to 100% O2 for 48 h.

Antioxidative Activities of Algal Keto Carotenoids Acting as Antioxidative Protectants in the Chloroplast

Photochemistry and Photobiology, 2014
AbstractVery diverse carotenoid structures exist in the photosynthesis apparatus of different algae. Among them, the keto derivatives are regarded the most antioxidative. Therefore, four different keto carotenoids, peridinin, fucoxanthin, siphonaxanthin and astaxanthin fatty acid monoesters, were isolated and purified from Amphidinium carterae ...

The antioxidant machinery of the endoplasmic reticulum: Protection and signaling

Free Radical Biology and Medicine, 2015
Cellular metabolism is inherently linked to the production of oxidizing by-products, including reactive oxygen species (ROS) hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). When present in excess, H2O2 can damage cellular biomolecules, but when produced in coordinated fashion, it typically serves as a mobile signaling messenger.

Antioxidants: Protection Versus Apoptosis

2000
Tissue homeostasis is tightly regulated by both proliferation and cell death. These processes are crucial in embryogenesis during the development of the central nervous system (Rcaff 1993; Narayanan 1997) and the development (Von Boehmer 1992) and function of the immune system (Cohen And Duke 1992).
