Modeling sRNA-Regulated Plasmid Maintenance. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2017
We study a theoretical model for the toxin-antitoxin (hok/sok) mechanism for plasmid maintenance in bacteria. Toxin-antitoxin systems enforce the maintenance of a plasmid through post-segregational killing of cells that have lost the plasmid.

A Single Tri-Epitopic Antibody Virtually Recapitulates the Potency of a Combination of Three Monoclonal Antibodies in Neutralization of Botulinum Neurotoxin Serotype A [PDF]

open access: yesToxins, 2018
The standard of treatment for botulism, equine antitoxin, is a foreign protein with associated safety issues and a short serum half-life which excludes its use as a prophylactic antitoxin and makes it a less-than-optimal therapeutic.

Mono- and multidomain defense toxins of the RelE/ParE superfamily [PDF]

open access: yesmBio
Toxin–antitoxin (TA) modules are widely distributed across prokaryotes, often existing in large numbers despite their associated fitness costs. Most type II TA modules are bicistronic operons encoding a monodomain toxin and its cognate protein antitoxin.

Unconventional mRNA processing and degradation pathways for the polycistronic yrzI (spyTA) mRNA in Bacillus subtilis. [PDF]

open access: yesFEBS Lett
The S1025 peptide is the major antidote to the YrzI toxin, which we renamed here as SpyT (Small Peptide YrzI Toxin) and SpyA (Small Peptide YrzI Antitoxin) (1). Degradation of the toxin–antitoxin spyTA mRNA, either by a translation‐dependent cleavage by the endoribonuclease Rae1 (2) or by direct attack by 3′‐exoribonucleases (3), also contributes to ...

Investigation of the Frequency of Foodborne Botulism in Patients Referred to Loghman Hospital in Tehran City, Iran, From 2008 to 2019 [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Medical Toxicology and Forensic Medicine, 2020
Background: Foodborne botulism is a fatal paralytic illness caused mainly by the neurotoxin produced by an anaerobic bacterium called Clostridium botulinum. In this study, the frequency of foodborne botulism in patients referred to a hospital in Iran has

Establishment of a Novel Oral Murine Model of Ricin Intoxication and Efficacy Assessment of Ovine Ricin Antitoxins

open access: yesToxins, 2020
Ricin, produced from the castor beans of Ricinus communis, is a cytotoxin that exerts its action by inactivating ribosomes and causing cell death. Accidental (e.g., ingestion of castor beans) and/or intentional (e.g., suicide) exposure to ricin through ...

Medical Countermeasures against Ricin Intoxication

open access: yesToxins, 2023
Ricin toxin is a disulfide-linked glycoprotein (AB toxin) comprising one enzymatic A chain (RTA) and one cell-binding B chain (RTB) contained in the castor bean, a Ricinus species.

Post-Exposure Anti-Ricin Treatment Protects Swine against Lethal Systemic and Pulmonary Exposures

open access: yesToxins, 2020
Ricin, a plant-derived toxin originating from the seeds of Ricinus communis (castor bean plant), is one of the most lethal toxins known. To date, there is no approved post-exposure therapy for ricin exposures.

Rapid Identification of Secondary Structure and Binding Site Residues in an Intrinsically Disordered Protein Segment

open access: yesFrontiers in Genetics, 2021
Mycobacterium tuberculosis harbours nine toxin-antitoxin (TA) systems of the MazEF family. MazEF TA modules are of immense importance due to the perceived role of the MazF toxin in M. tuberculosis persistence and disease.

Large-scale Purification of Type III Toxin-antitoxin Ribonucleoprotein Complex and its Components from Escherichia coli for Biophysical Studies

open access: yesBio-Protocol, 2023
Toxin–antitoxin (TA) systems are widespread bacterial immune systems that confer protection against various environmental stresses. TA systems have been classified into eight types (I–VIII) based on the nature and mechanism of action of the antitoxin ...
