Synthesis of 5-substituted 2'-deoxyuridine-5'-phosphonate analogues and evaluation of their antiviral activity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
A small series of 5-(hetero)aryl-modified nucleoside phosphonates was synthesized via an 8-step procedure including a Wittig reaction and Suzuki-Miyaura coupling.

Crucial Role of Selenium in the Virucidal Activity of Benzisoselenazol-3(2H)-ones and Related Diselenides

open access: yesMolecules, 2010
Various N-substituted benzisoselenazol-3(2H)-ones and their non-selenium-containing analogues have been synthesized and tested against selected viruses (HHV-1, EMCV and VSV) to determine the extent to which selenium plays a role in antiviral activity ...

New insights into control of arbovirus replication and spread by insect RNA interference pathways [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Arthropod-borne (arbo) viruses are transmitted by vectors, such as mosquitoes, to susceptible vertebrates. Recent research has shown that arbovirus replication and spread in mosquitoes is not passively tolerated but induces host responses to control ...

Viral-inducible Argonaute18 confers broad-spectrum virus resistance in rice by sequestering a host microRNA

open access: yeseLife, 2015
Viral pathogens are a major threat to rice production worldwide. Although RNA interference (RNAi) is known to mediate antiviral immunity in plant and animal models, the mechanism of antiviral RNAi in rice and other economically important crops is poorly ...

Chlorhexidine-filled porous ceramic coating fabricated by the aerosol deposition method for immediate and long-term enveloped virus inactivation

open access: yesJournal of Asian Ceramic Societies, 2022
We developed an antiviral ceramic coating for immediate and long-term enveloped virus inactivation. The coating consisted of a porous ceramic coating fabricated by aerosol deposition and filled with chlorhexidine (CHX).

Synthesis of IFN-β by Virus-Infected Chicken Embryo Cells Demonstrated with Specific Antisera and a New Bioassay [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Transcripts of interferon-α(IFN-α) and IFN-β genes are present in virus-infected chicken cells, but because of a lack of appropriate assays and reagents, it was unclear if biologically active IFN-β is secreted.

Progress in Antiviral Fullerene Research

open access: yesNanomaterials, 2022
Unlike traditional small molecule drugs, fullerene is an all-carbon nanomolecule with a spherical cage structure. Fullerene exhibits high levels of antiviral activity, inhibiting virus replication in vitro and in vivo.

Antiviral RNA Interference against Orsay Virus Is neither Systemic nor Transgenerational in Caenorhabditis elegans. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
UNLABELLED: Antiviral RNA-mediated silencing (RNA interference [RNAi]) acts as a powerful innate immunity defense in plants, invertebrates, and mammals. In Caenorhabditis elegans, RNAi is systemic; i.e., RNAi silencing signals can move between cells and ...

The anti‐CRISPR protein AcrIE8.1 inhibits the type I‐E CRISPR‐Cas system by directly binding to the Cascade subunit Cas11

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we present the structure of AcrIE8.1, a previously uncharacterized anti‐CRISPR protein that inhibits the type I‐E CRISPR‐Cas system. Through a combination of structural and biochemical analyses, we demonstrate that AcrIE8.1 directly binds to the Cas11 subunit of the Cascade complex to inhibit the CRISPR‐Cas system.
