Hydrocortisone-enhanced growth of Aspergillus spp.: implications for pathogenesis [PDF]

open access: yesMicrobiology, 1994
Aspergillus fumigatus and Aspergillus flavus are the most common cause of invasive mould infections worldwide and carry a high mortality. Corticosteroid therapy and Cushing's disease are associated with an increase in invasive aspergillosis. Corticosteroids impair immune function in mammals and, specifically, the conidicidal activity of human ...

Antioxidant and Cytotoxic Properties of Piper spp. Volatile Oils That Inhibit Pathogenic Microorganisms

open access: yesFlavour and Fragrance Journal, EarlyView.
The samples were fungicidal against Candida, with MICs ranging from 62.5 to 250 μg/mL, and fungistatic against Penicillium adametzii, Aspergillus flavus and A. niger, with MICs of 1000 μg/mL. The volatile oils of Piper aduncum and Piper marginatum reduced the viability of MDA‐MB231 cells.

Litsea cubeba Essential Oil Reduces Postharvest Blueberry Rot by Inducing Cell Membrane Damage and Reactive Oxygen Species Accumulation in Alternaria alternata

open access: yesFuture Postharvest and Food, EarlyView.
Litsea cubeba essential oil (LCEO) reduces blueberry rot while maintaining quality. It disrupts the cellular structure and membranes of Alternaria alternata, causing solute leakage, while simultaneously inducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) damage in the pathogen.
