Integration as a catalyst for assimilation [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Review of Economics & Finance, 2013
We draw a distinction between the social integration and economic assimilation of migrants, and study an interaction between the two. We define social integration as blending into the host country’s society, and economic assimilation as acquisition of human capital that is specific to the host country’s labor market.

Spot‐14 and its paralog Spot‐14R regulate expression of metabolic and thermogenic pathway genes in murine brown and beige adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Spot‐14 and Spot‐14R play distinct roles in regulating metabolism in brown and beige adipocytes. While both influence lipid and glucose pathways, Spot‐14 uniquely controls thermogenic gene expression. This dual regulation balances energy storage and heat production, highlighting potential therapeutic targets for obesity and metabolic disorders. Spot 14

The interplay between migrants and natives as a determinant of migrants' assimilation: A coevolutionary approach [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
We study the migrants' assimilation, which we conceptualize as forming human capital productive on the labor market of a developed host country, and we link the observed frequent lack of assimilation with the relative deprivation that the migrants start to feel when they move in social space towards the natives.

A stepwise emergence of evolution in the RNA world

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
How did biological evolution emerge from chemical reactions? This perspective proposes a gradual scenario of self‐organization among RNA molecules, where catalytic feedback on random mixtures plays the central role. Short oligomers cross‐ligate, and self‐assembly enables heritable variations. An event of template‐externalization marks the transition to

An Observation‐Driven Approach to Improve Vegetation Phenology in a Global Land Surface Model

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, 2020
An empirical model calibration approach is presented that aims to approximate missing biosphere processes in a global land surface model without the need for substantial model structural changes.

Ensemble-based kernel learning for a class of data assimilation problems with imperfect forward simulators [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE 14(7): e0219247, 2019, 2019
Simulator imperfection, often known as model error, is ubiquitous in practical data assimilation problems. Despite the enormous efforts dedicated to addressing this problem, properly handling simulator imperfection in data assimilation remains to be a challenging task.

UNIVERSAL NASAL ASSIMILATIONS IN MONOMORPHEMIC AND POLYMORPHEMIC WORDS ACROSS LANGUAGES [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
There are universal aspects in language. Phonology, as the most universal languagecomponent, has many universal aspects including nasal assimilation. Nasal assimilation isthe systematic appearance of certain nasals instead of other nasals based on the ...
