When Is Atherosclerosis Not Atherosclerosis? [PDF]
To the Editor: When is atherosclerosis not atherosclerosis? In the last decade, there have been 2 revolutions in the study of atherosclerosis. On the one hand, a more sophisticated appreciation of the relationship between the morphology and fate of human atherosclerotic plaques and clinical outcomes has been developed.

Alcohol and atherosclerosis [PDF]
Atherosclerosis is manifested as coronary artery disease (CAD), ischemic stroke and peripheral vascular disease. Moderate alcohol consumption has been associated with reduction of CAD complications. Apparently, red wine offers more benefits than any other kind of drinks, probably due to flavonoids. Alcohol alters lipoproteins and the coagulation system.

Inflammation and Atherosclerosis [PDF]
The aim of this article is to discuss the role of inflammation in atherosclerosis. An initial chemical, mechanical or immunological insult induces endothelial dysfunction. This triggers a cascade of inflammatory reactions, in which monocytes, macrophages, T lymphocytes and vascular smooth muscle cells participate. Leukocyte adhesion molecules, cytokines,

In this chapter, we discuss the manner through which the immune system regulates the cardiovascular system in health and disease. We define the cardiovascular system and elements of atherosclerotic disease, the main focus in this chapter. Herein we elaborate on the disease process that can result in myocardial infarction (heart attack), ischaemic ...

Atherosclerosis, a disease of the large arteries, is the primary cause of heart disease and stroke. In westernized societies, it is the underlying cause of about 50% of all deaths. Epidemiological studies have revealed several important environmental and genetic risk factors associated with atherosclerosis.

The direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) have now supplanted vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) for the treatment of venous thromboembolism (VTE). The DOACs include dabigatran, which inhibits thrombin, and rivaroxaban, apixaban, and edoxaban, which inhibit ...

Automated Coronary Artery Atherosclerosis Detection and Weakly Supervised Localization on Coronary CT Angiography with a Deep 3-Dimensional Convolutional Neural Network [PDF]
We propose a fully automated algorithm based on a deep learning framework enabling screening of a coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) examination for confident detection of the presence or absence of coronary artery atherosclerosis.

A mathematical model of the atherosclerosis development in thin blood vessels and its asymptotic approximation [PDF]
Some existing models of the atherosclerosis development are discussed and a new improved mathematical model, which takes into account new experimental results about diverse roles of macrophages in atherosclerosis, is proposed. Using technic of upper and lower solutions, the existence and uniqueness of its positive solution are justified.
