Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Role of d orbitals in the Rashba-type spin splitting for noble-metal surfaces

open access: yes, 2012
We investigate the Rashba-type spin splitting in the Shockley surface states on Au(111) and Ag(111) surfaces, based on first-principles calculations. By turning on and off spin-orbit interaction (SOI) partly, we show that although the surface states are ...

Transcriptional network analysis of PTEN‐protein‐deficient prostate tumors reveals robust stromal reprogramming and signs of senescent paracrine communication

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Combining PTEN protein assessment and transcriptomic profiling of prostate tumors, we uncovered a network enriched in senescence and extracellular matrix (ECM) programs associated with PTEN loss and conserved in a mouse model. We show that PTEN‐deficient cells trigger paracrine remodeling of the surrounding stroma and this information could help ...

Biomimetic Au/CeO2 Catalysts Decorated with Hemin or Ferrous Phthalocyanine for Improved CO Oxidation via Local Synergistic Effects

open access: yesiScience, 2020
Summary: Biomimetic catalysts have drawn broad research interest owing to both high specificity and excellent catalytic activity. Herein, we report a series of biomimetic catalysts by the integration of biomolecules (hemin or ferrous phthalocyanine) onto

Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in the local density of topological surface states

open access: yes, 2011
We study Aharonov-Bohm (AB) oscillations in the local density of states (LDOS) for topological insulator (TI) and conventional metal Au(111) surfaces with spin-orbit interaction, which can be probed by spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy.

Noncovalent Dimerization after Enediyne Cyclization on Au(111) [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the American Chemical Society, 2016
We investigate the thermally-induced cyclization of 1,2 - bis(2 - phenylethynyl)benzene on Au(111) using scanning tunneling microscopy and computer simulations. Cyclization of sterically hindered enediynes is known to proceed via two competing mechanisms in solution: a classic C1 - C6 or a C1 - C5 cyclization pathway.

Orientation Selection of Supported Au Nanoparticles on (111)- and (001)-Terminated SrTiO3 Substrates

open access: yesCrystals, 2022
Orientation-dependent performance has been demonstrated in different materials consisting of nanoparticles on substrates. The fabrication of desirably oriented nanoparticles requires knowledge of orientation selection rules.

Role of surface states in STM spectroscopy of (111) metal surfaces with Kondo adsorbates

open access: yes, 2004
A nearly-free-electron (NFE) model to describe STM spectroscopy of (111) metal surfaces with Kondo impurities is presented. Surface states are found to play an important role giving a larger contribution to the conductance in the case of Cu(111) and Au ...

Colorectal cancer‐derived FGF19 is a metabolically active serum biomarker that exerts enteroendocrine effects on mouse liver

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Meta‐transcriptome analysis identified FGF19 as a peptide enteroendocrine hormone associated with colorectal cancer prognosis. In vivo xenograft models showed release of FGF19 into the blood at levels that correlated with tumor volumes. Tumoral‐FGF19 altered murine liver metabolism through FGFR4, thereby reducing bile acid synthesis and increasing ...
