Preparation of Avidin Conjugates [PDF]
The high-affinity avidin-biotin system has found applications in different fields of biotechnology, including immunoassays, histochemistry, affinity chromatography, and drug delivery, to name a few. A brief description of avidin and avidin-like molecules, streptavidin, deglycosylated avidin, and NeutraLite avidin is presented in the Chapter 2.

Recombinant avidin and avidin–fusion proteins
Biomolecular Engineering, 1999Both chicken egg-white avidin and its bacterial relative streptavidin are well known for their extraordinary high affinity with biotin (Kd approximately 10(-15) M). They are widely used as tools in a number of affinity-based separations, in diagnostic assays and in a variety of other applications. These methods have collectively become known as (strept)

Avidin. II. Composition and mode of action of avidin A
Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 1952Abstract Avidin A is a glycoprotein containing mannose and hexosamine. Data concerning its amino acid composition and its amino, acidic, and basic groups are given. Avidin XA, while similar in most analytical respects, contains galactose also. A variety of chemical modification reactions did not appreciably affect the biotin-binding activity of ...

AVIDIN has been shown to bind the vitamin biotin, but the mechanism of binding is still unknown. Modification of the avidin molecule by acetylation, esterifieation or by blocking the amide, guanidyl, imidazole and phenolic groups did not result in a loss of its ability to bind biotin1.

Hormonal Properties of Avidin-Biotinylinsulin and Avidin-Biotinylcorticotropin Complexes
Hoppe-Seyler´s Zeitschrift für physiologische Chemie, 1981In connection with the development of affinity columns (based on the avidin-biotin interaction) for retrieval of peptide and protein hormone receptors, the hormonal properties of a number of avidin-biotinylinsulin and avidin-bioinylcorticotropin complexes were examined.

Avidin–Biotin Technology: Preparation of Avidin Conjugates
2003The second step required in the application of avidin-biotin technology is to prepare an appropriate avidin-associated probe or probes for the desired application (for general reviews, see refs. 1 and 2). For example, a fluorescent form of avidin can be used for fluorescence microscopy, fluorescence-activated cell sorting, and in some cases, for ...

The avidin-biotin complex in immunology
Immunology Today, 1984The tenacious interaction between the vitamin biotin and theglycoprotein avidin has been applied in many immunological systems for the isolation, localization and visualization of various antigens as well as drug delivery, lymphocyte stimulation and immunoassays.

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the fundamental molecular properties of avidin and streptavidin. Carbohydrate-free avidin can be obtained by use of deglycosylating enzymes and it has been shown to be present in significant amounts in some commercial preparations from which it may be separated by use of lectin columns.
