Bioengineered Interfaces for Peripheral Nerve Sensory Restoration

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Half of amputees abandon their prosthetics for lack of feeling. This review charts the full path from peripheral nerve injury to restored sensation, through surgical, regenerative, noninvasive, and implanted approaches, and shows how injury type and interface material properties determine which strategy can deliver naturalistic feedback, and why ...

Selective inhibition of small-diameter axons using infrared light [PDF]

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
AbstractNovel clinical treatments to target peripheral nerves are being developed which primarily use electrical current. Recently, infrared (IR) light was shown to inhibit peripheral nerves with high spatial and temporal specificity. Here, for the first time, we demonstrate that IR can selectively and reversibly inhibit small-diameter axons at lower ...

Bottom‐Up Engineering of a Human Neuromuscular System for Modeling Activity‐Induced Remodeling, Metabolic Stress, and Endothelial‐Modulated Excitability

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Using a bottom‐up approach, we engineered a human neuromuscular microchip to investigate distinct adaptive responses to neural stimulation and metabolic stress. Further integration of endothelial cells revealed their critical role in modulating neuromuscular excitability, establishing a comprehensive neurovascular‐muscular model.

Electrical activity suppresses intrinsic growth competence in adult primary sensory neurons [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The ability of neurons to regenerate in the adult mammalian central nervous system (CNS) is often poor, leading to persistent deficits after injury. Failure of axon regeneration in the CNS has been attributed to the presence of an extrinsic inhibitory ...

Mitochondrial damage and “plugging” of transport selectively in myelinated, small-diameter axons are major early events in peripheral neuroinflammation

open access: yesJournal of Neuroinflammation, 2018
Background Small-diameter, myelinated axons are selectively susceptible to dysfunction in several inflammatory PNS and CNS diseases, resulting in pain and degeneration, but the mechanism is not known.

NeuroSuite for Long‐Term Functional and Structural Studies of Air‐Liquid Interface Cerebral Organoids

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
NeuroSuite provides a modular hardware‐software platform integrating Neuroweb and NeuroMaps to enable long‐term, in situ electrophysiological interrogation of air–liquid interface organoid slices while preserving tissue architecture. Its components can be used together or independently to capture real‐time activity, spatial network dynamics, and ...

Could sex differences in white matter be explained by g ratio?

open access: yesFrontiers in Neuroanatomy, 2009
Recent studies with magnetic resonance imaging suggest that age-related changes in white matter during male adolescence may indicate an increase in g ratio wherein the radial growth of an axon outpaces a corresponding increase in myelin thickness.

Molecular regulation of axon termination in mechanosensory neurons [PDF]

open access: yes
Spatially and temporally accurate termination of axon outgrowth, a process called axon termination, is required for efficient, precise nervous system construction and wiring.

Innate Immunocompetent hiPSC‐Derived Neurospheroids Capture Early CNS Responses to rAAV

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Knowledge of human CNS immune responses to AAV‐based gene therapies remains limited due to the lack of immune‐competent human models. Here, a hiPSC‐derived 3D neuroimmune platform integrating neurospheroids and microglia is established using stirred‐tank bioreactors.
