Control over molecular motion using the cis–trans photoisomerization of the azo group

open access: yesBeilstein Journal of Organic Chemistry, 2012
Control over molecular motion represents an important objective in modern chemistry. Aromatic azobenzenes are excellent candidates as molecular switches since they can exist in two forms, namely the cis (Z) and trans (E) isomers, which can interconvert ...

Charge-transfer dynamics in azobenzene alkanethiolate self-assembled monolayers on gold [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
We have studied the charge transfer dynamics in azobenzene-functionalized alkanethiolate self-assembled monolayers. We compare the core-hole clock technique, i.e., resonant vs. non-resonant contributions in the azobenzene autoionization of the C1s-pi∗

Smart Nanotechnologies for Multimodal Neuromodulation and Brain Interfacing

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Recent advances in smart nanotechnologies are expanding the toolbox for brain interfacing, from wireless neuromodulation and high‐resolution sensing to targeted delivery within the central nervous system. By combining responsive nanomaterials with bioinspired design, these platforms enable multimodal interactions with neurons and glia, while also ...

Kinetic Monte Carlo Simulations for Birefringence Relaxation of Photo-Switchable Molecules on a Surface

open access: yes, 2016
Recent experiments have demonstrated that in a dense monolayer of photo-switchable dye Methyl-Red molecules the relaxation of an initial birefringence follows a power-law decay, typical for glass-like dynamics.

Optical differential reflectance spectroscopy for photochromic molecules on solid surfaces [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Optical reflectance of thin adsorbates on solid surfaces is able to reveal fundamental changes of molecular properties compared to bulk systems. The detection of very small changes in the optical reflectance required several technical improvements in the

A Wood Plasticine With Controlled Phase‐Change Behavior and Malleability for Energy‐Closed‐Loop and Conformally Adaptive Thermal Management

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A photothermal wood plasticine exhibiting controlled phase‐change behavior and malleable property is developed. The developed wood plasticine can provide all‐day, on‐demand, and low‐loss solar heating for geometrically diverse objects, including thermoelectric generator, human body, and battery, through its controlled crystallization‐melting ...

Predicting and Rationalizing Piezoelectricity in Racemic Bioorganic Molecular Crystals

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
Racemic molecular crystals, composed of equal mixtures of chiral enantiomeric components, are predicted to exhibit significant piezoelectric responses and favourable mechanical flexibility. This study identifies organic and bioorganic racemates as promising candidates for sustainable, lead‐free materials, enabling next‐generation applications in energy

Synthesis of mono-functionalized S-diazocines via intramolecular Baeyer–Mills reactions

open access: yesBeilstein Journal of Organic Chemistry, 2018
Herein we report a reliable method to synthesize mono-functionalized S-diazocines in reproducible yields via intramolecular Baeyer–Mills reactions. Diazocines exhibit excellent photoswitchable properties. As opposed to azobenzenes they are more stable in

Optical manipulation of sphingolipid biosynthesis using photoswitchable ceramides [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Ceramides are central intermediates of sphingolipid metabolism that also function as potent messengers in stress signaling and apoptosis. Progress in understanding how ceramides execute their biological roles is hampered by a lack of methods to ...

Bidirectional Photoswitching of a Tailored Azobenzene with Red and Far‐Red Light Involving Triplet Sensitization in an Aqueous System

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The action spectrum of a tailored azobenzene is shifted toward bio‐optical window through the chemical modification of its singlet and triplet energy levels. Consequently, the bidirectional photo‐switching of azobenzene in physiological conditions is achieved when excited by red and far‐red light, which offers greater tissue penetration.
