Comprehensive Data-Driven Assessment of Non-Kinase Targets of Inhibitors of the Human Kinome

open access: yesBiomolecules
Protein kinases (PKs) are involved in many intracellular signal transduction pathways through phosphorylation cascades and have become intensely investigated pharmaceutical targets over the past two decades.

Forecasting the Dialysis Burden in Japan: Validation‐Based Projections of Prevalence and Incidence Through 2050

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Japan has one of the highest dialysis prevalence rates worldwide and a shrinking, aging population. Whether dialysis burden has entered a sustained post‐peak phase or whether recent declines partly reflect pandemic‐related disruptions remains uncertain.

Generative design of compounds with desired potency from target protein sequences using a multimodal biochemical language model

open access: yesJournal of Cheminformatics
Deep learning models adapted from natural language processing offer new opportunities for the prediction of active compounds via machine translation of sequential molecular data representations. For example, chemical language models are often derived for

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Advanced Analysis of Electroretinograms Based on Wavelet Scalogram Processing

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2022
The electroretinography (ERG) is a diagnostic test that measures the electrical activity of the retina in response to a light stimulus. The current ERG signal analysis uses four components, namely amplitude, and the latency of a-wave and b-wave. Nowadays,

The human gut microbiome across the life course

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Despite significant individual variation and continuous change throughout life, the human gut microbiome follows some life stage‐specific trends. This article provides a brief overview of how gut microbiome composition shifts across different phases of life. Created in BioRender. Özkurt, E. (2026) https://BioRender.com/8q4nrnc.

The power of embodied and arts-based learning in the Shared Humanity experiential learning opportunity at Stellenbosch University.

open access: yes
ABSTRACTThe transformation of higher education in South Africa has tended to focus on issues such as access and representation, leaving curricula insufficiently addressed. This is surprising, considering that much previous scholarship, including the recent Khampepe Report, has called for the implementation of a specific pedagogical framework to foster ...

Reconstructing enzyme evolution by protein engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Natural enzyme evolution can be retraced by protein engineering methods such as directed evolution, rational design, and ancestral sequence reconstruction. These approaches reveal how enzymes emerged from ligand‐binding scaffolds, developed varying substrate preferences, formed oligomeric complexes, adapted to environmental changes, and evolved novel ...
