Game-matching background music has an add-on effect for reducing emotionality of traumatic memories during reconsolidation intervention

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychiatry, 2023
IntroductionHospital is a stressful place of employment, and a high proportion of healthcare workers, especially the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) nurses were found to be at risk of PTSD.

Approximate parameter inference in systems biology using gradient matching: a comparative evaluation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Background: A challenging problem in current systems biology is that of parameter inference in biological pathways expressed as coupled ordinary differential equations (ODEs).

Background-matching and disruptive coloration, and the evolution of cryptic coloration [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, 2005
Cryptic prey coloration typically bears a resemblance to the habitat the prey uses. It has been suggested that coloration which visually matches a random sample of the background maximizes background matching. We studied this previously untested hypothesis, as well as another, little studied principle of concealment, disruptive coloration,

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Matching of Remote Sensing Images with Complex Background Variations via Siamese Convolutional Neural Network

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2018
Feature-based matching methods have been widely used in remote sensing image matching given their capability to achieve excellent performance despite image geometric and radiometric distortions.

Generalized Superconformal Index for Three Dimensional Field Theories [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
We introduce a generalization of the S^2 x S^1 superconformal index where background gauge fields with magnetic flux are coupled to the global symmetries of the theory. This allows one to gauge a global symmetry at the level of the index, which we use to

Disruptive coloration provides camouflage independent of background matching [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, 2006
Natural selection shapes the evolution of anti-predator defences, such as camouflage. It is currently contentious whether crypsis and disruptive coloration are alternative mechanisms of camouflage or whether they are interrelated anti-predator defences. Disruptively coloured prey is characterized by highly contrasting patterns to conceal the body shape,

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Dynamic colour change in zebrafish (Danio rerio) across multiple contexts

open access: yesRoyal Society Open Science
Many animals are capable of rapid dynamic colour change, which is particularly well represented in fishes. The proximate mechanisms of dynamic colour change in fishes are well understood; however, less attention has been given to understanding its ...
