Survivin and Aurora Kinase A control cell fate decisions during mitosis

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aurora A interacts with survivin during mitosis and regulates its centromeric role. Loss of Aurora A activity mislocalises survivin, the CPC and BubR1, leading to disruption of the spindle checkpoint and triggering premature mitotic exit, which we refer to as ‘mitotic slippage’.

Extracellular Vesicles in Host–Pathogen Interactions: Roles of Exosomes and Bacterial Outer Membrane Vesicles in Immunity and Microbial Communication

open access: yesBacteria
Extracellular vesicles, encompassing eukaryotic exosomes and bacterial outer membrane vesicles (OMVs), play multifaceted roles in mediating host–pathogen interactions.

Improving PARP inhibitor efficacy in bladder cancer without genetic BRCAness by combination with PLX51107

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Clinical trials on PARP inhibitors in urothelial carcinoma (UC) showed limited efficacy and a lack of predictive biomarkers. We propose SLFN5, SLFN11, and OAS1 as UC‐specific response predictors. We suggest Talazoparib as the better PARP inhibitor for UC than Olaparib.

Shiga Toxin Genes Detected in Fecal Samples of Illinois Finisher Pigs

open access: yesBacteria
(1) Background: Pigs can be another host of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC), suggesting that pork products could be a potential risk to public health. A USDA National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS) study revealed that Shiga toxin genes were

Developing evidence‐based, cost‐effective P4 cancer medicine for driving innovation in prevention, therapeutics, patient care and reducing healthcare inequalities

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The cancer problem is increasing globally with projections up to the year 2050 showing unfavourable outcomes in terms of incidence and cancer‐related deaths. The main challenges are prevention, improved therapeutics resulting in increased cure rates and enhanced health‐related quality of life.

Biologically Relevant Methods to Test How Microbes Colonize Maize Styles (Silks): Case Study of a Pantoea Strain

open access: yesBacteria
Maize silks (style) receive wind-transmitted pollen. Thereafter, male gametes travel through the silks to reach ovules. Pollinated silks contain a microbiome, members of which are predicted to promote host reproduction and abiotic/biotic stress tolerance

PRODUCTION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF CRUDE INTRACELLULER PHYTASE FROM RECOMBINANT BACTERIA pEAS1AMP [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
This research was aimed at producing a crude intracellular phytase characterized from recombinant bacteria. The recombinant bacteria (pEAS1AMP) was produced by way of transforming pET-22b(+) +pEAS1 into competent E. coli BL21 and E.

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Lipopolysaccharide from Proteus mirabilis Slows Platelet Plug Formation in Human Whole Blood

open access: yesBacteria
Platelets are well known for their role in hemostasis. Additionally, platelets play a crucial role in immune and inflammatory responses. Toll-like receptors (TLRs) can mediate bacterial interactions during infection, triggering platelets to initiate an ...
