Antimicrobial Activities and Mechanisms of Magnesium Oxide Nanoparticles (nMgO) against Pathogenic Bacteria, Yeasts, and Biofilms. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Magnesium oxide nanoparticle (nMgO) is a light metal based antimicrobial nanoparticle that can be metabolized and fully resorbed in the body. To take advantage of the antimicrobial properties of nMgO for medical use, it is necessary to determine the ...

Quorum sensing in bacteria: the LuxR-LuxI family of cell density-responsive transcriptional regulators

open access: yesJournal of Bacteriology, 1994
It has long been appreciated that certain groups of bacteria exhibit cooperative behavioral patterns. For example, feeding and sporulation of both myxobacteria and actinomycetes seem optimized for large populations of cells behaving almost as a single ...

Subpar reporting of pre‐analytical variables in RNA‐focused blood plasma studies

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Pre‐analytical variables strongly influence the analysis of extracellular RNA (cell‐free RNA; exRNA) derived from blood plasma. Their reporting is essential to allow interpretation and replication of results. By evaluating 200 exRNA studies, we pinpoint a lack of reporting pre‐analytical variables associated with blood collection, plasma preparation ...

Chronic Wounds: The Persistent Infection Problem [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Chronic wounds heal poorly and can have a huge impact on a sufferer’s life. They are caused by a number of factors, one of which is the presence of persistent infections.

Gut microbiota diversity is prognostic and associated with benefit from chemo‐immunotherapy in metastatic triple‐negative breast cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We assessed the associations between the gut microbiota and outcome in metastatic triple‐negative breast cancer patients treated with chemotherapy alone or chemotherapy in combination with immunotherapy. Our data indicate that high gut microbiota alpha diversity was associated with improved clinical outcome and with benefit from immunotherapy.

Near real-time enumeration of live and dead bacteria using a fibre-based spectroscopic device [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
A rapid, cost-effective and easy method that allows on-site determination of the concentration of live and dead bacterial cells using a fibre-based spectroscopic device (the optrode system) is proposed and demonstrated. Identification of live and dead bacteria was achieved by using the commercially available dyes SYTO 9 and propidium iodide, and ...

Improving Bacteria Controller Efficiency [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
We present a novel approach that would enable the placement of dynamic sensor platforms in the most optimal areas for data collection in an environment of any size.

Nano-Strategies to Fight Multidrug Resistant Bacteria—“A Battle of the Titans”

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2018
Infectious diseases remain one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The WHO and CDC have expressed serious concern regarding the continued increase in the development of multidrug resistance among bacteria.
