Spatial scales of interactions among bacteria and between bacteria and the leaf surface. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Microbial life on plant leaves is characterized by a multitude of interactions between leaf colonizers and their environment. While the existence of many of these interactions has been confirmed, their spatial scale or reach often remained unknown.

GABA Modulating Bacteria of the Human Gut Microbiota

open access: yesNature Microbiology, 2018
The gut microbiota affects many important host functions, including the immune response and the nervous system1. However, while substantial progress has been made in growing diverse microorganisms of the microbiota2, 23–65% of species residing in the ...

Bacterias anaerobias

The Antagonism Of Bacteria And Their Products To Other Bacteria [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Infectious Diseases, 1905
Everywhere in nature we see numerous examples of two opposing biological activities. On the one hand, living organisms frequently derive mutual benefit by association; on the other, the presence of one organism, or its products, is inimical to the life and growth of certain other forms.

The languages of bacteria [PDF]

open access: yesGenes & Development, 2001
Bacteria communicate with one another using chemical signaling molecules as words. Specifically, they release, detect, and respond to the accumulation of these molecules, which are called autoinducers. Detection of autoinducers allows bacteria to distinguish between low and high cell population density, and to control gene expression in response to ...

Unconventional mRNA processing and degradation pathways for the polycistronic yrzI (spyTA) mRNA in Bacillus subtilis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The S1025 peptide is the major antidote to the YrzI toxin, which we renamed here as SpyT (Small Peptide YrzI Toxin) and SpyA (Small Peptide YrzI Antitoxin) (1). Degradation of the toxin–antitoxin spyTA mRNA, either by a translation‐dependent cleavage by the endoribonuclease Rae1 (2) or by direct attack by 3′‐exoribonucleases (3), also contributes to ...

Entanglement between living bacteria and quantized light witnessed by Rabi splitting [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2017
We model recent experiments on living sulphur bacteria interacting with quantised light, using the Dicke model. The strong coupling achieved between the bacteria and the light indicates that during the experiment the bacteria (treated as dipoles) and the quantized light are entangled.

Quorum sensing in bacteria: the LuxR-LuxI family of cell density-responsive transcriptional regulators

open access: yesJournal of Bacteriology, 1994
It has long been appreciated that certain groups of bacteria exhibit cooperative behavioral patterns. For example, feeding and sporulation of both myxobacteria and actinomycetes seem optimized for large populations of cells behaving almost as a single ...

The solution supramolecular structure of α2 → 8 polysialic acid suggests a structural cause for its low immunogenicity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
α2 → 8 polysialic acid elicits poor immunogenicity. Small‐angle scattering shows a supramolecular structure with parallel‐chain binding, although in different forms at μm and mm calcium. The major histocompatibility complex requires molecular weights around 2000 Da to produce antibodies, and 2000 Da polysialic oligomers will bind in these structures ...

Chronic Wounds: The Persistent Infection Problem [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Chronic wounds heal poorly and can have a huge impact on a sufferer’s life. They are caused by a number of factors, one of which is the presence of persistent infections.
