Review of Lee Kass's “From Chromosomes to Mobile Genetic Elements: The Life and Work of Nobel Laureate Barbara McClintock”

open access: yesNatural Sciences, EarlyView.
Abstract From decades of research, Lee Kass has written a definitive biography of Nobel Laureate Barbara McClintock. Her life and work from birth to death are documented in great detail including the discovery of transposable elements and how this discovery was initially received and eventually accepted.

Measuring the Thermal Unfolding of Lysozyme: A Critical Comparison of Differential Scanning Fluorimetry and Differential Scanning Calorimetry

open access: yesChemistryOpen, EarlyView.
The thermal unfolding of lysozyme in aqueous solution is analyzed by (nano) differential scanning fluorimetry (nanoDSF) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Dynamic light scattering (DLS) in parallel to the DSF measurements shows the expansion of the protein during unfolding. The combination of DSF, DSC, and DLS leads to a complete and detailed

Interactions of rare earth elements with living organisms and emerging biotechnical applications

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Rare earth elements (REEs) are critical resources required to achieve net‐zero carbon emission targets and energy security. However, rising demand for REEs coupled with significant extraction and processing challenges and geopolitical risks restricts access to REE resources.

Layer‐by‐Layer Assembly of Plant Viruses Utilizing Specific Binding

open access: yesphysica status solidi (a), EarlyView.
A bilayer of the tomato bushy stunt virus (TBSV) is constructed layer‐by‐layer by utilizing the specific interaction between Strep‐Tactin (an engineered type of streptavidin) and modified TBSV with Strep‐Tag II (an engineered type of biotin) side chains. A layer coverage above 84% could be achieved.
