Dreaming of Better Treatments: Advances in Drug Development for Sleep Medicine and Chronotherapy

open access: yesJournal of Sleep Research, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Throughout history, the development of new sleep medicines has been driven by progress in our understanding of the mechanisms underlying sleep. Ancient civilisations used their understanding of the sedative nature of natural herbs and compounds to induce sleep.

Cost‐Effective Nanosensor Solutions for Ultra‐Sensitive Detection of Metronidazole

open access: yesAnalytical Science Advances, Volume 6, Issue 1, June 2025.
ABSTRACT Metronidazole (MNZ) is a widely used imidazole antibiotic effective against bacterial and protozoal infections, including giardiasis, trichomoniasis, bacterial vaginosis, and antibiotic‐associated colitis. However, prolonged and excessive use of MNZ can lead to serious side effects, such as peripheral neuropathies, toxicity, and optic ...

Presumptive Tests for Xylazine—A Computer Vision Approach

open access: yesAnalytical Science Advances, Volume 6, Issue 1, June 2025.
ABSTRACT Abuse of xylazine is an immediate global public health concern. We report the distinct and measurable colour changes when xylazine is exposed to the Mandelin, Marquis and Mecke presumptive test reagents. The colour changes observed with xylazine are distinct from those of drugs that give colour changes from the same presumptive tests.

Neuropsychiatric Symptoms and White Matter Hyperintensities in Older Cognitively Unimpaired Men Versus Women

open access: yesInternational Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, Volume 40, Issue 6, June 2025.
ABSTRACT Objectives We aimed to examine association patterns of white matter hyperintensities (WMH) with neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) in men versus women. Methods We performed a cross‐sectional analysis of data acquired from the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center database.

Supramolecular Brake for Slowing Fentanyl Into Brain to Ameliorate Its Therapeutic Outcome

open access: yesSmartMat, Volume 6, Issue 3, June 2025.
An effective and universal supramolecular brake strategy for ameliorating the therapeutic outcome of fentanyl analogs has been proposed via simply host–guest recognition. Coadministration with well‐matched macrocyclic hosts decelerates the velocity of entering the brain of guest drugs, thereby alleviating respiratory depression caused by them.

Best practices for blood collection and anaesthesia in mice: Selection, application and reporting

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, Volume 182, Issue 11, Page 2337-2353, June 2025.
Abstract Blood collection in mice is a common procedure in biomedical research. The choice of blood collection method and the need for analgesia and/or anaesthesia depend on multiple factors, including the experimental setup, animal welfare considerations and the intended downstream analyses.

Brain pathology caused in the neonatal macaque by short and prolonged exposures to anticonvulsant drugs

open access: yesNeurobiology of Disease, 2021
Barbiturates and benzodiazepines are potent GABAA receptor agonists and strong anticonvulsants. In the developing brain they can cause neuronal and oligodendroglia apoptosis, impair synaptogenesis, inhibit neurogenesis and trigger long-term ...

Rapid visualization of fingerprints on various surfaces using ZnO superstructures prepared via simple combustion route

open access: yesJournal of Science: Advanced Materials and Devices, 2018
A simple solution combustion route has been used to prepare ZnO nanopowders (NPs) using different barbiturates (Barbituric acid, 1, 3-dimethyl barbiturates and 2-thiobarbiturates) as fuels.
