Comparison of a Rat Primary Cell-Based Blood-Brain Barrier Model With Epithelial and Brain Endothelial Cell Lines: Gene Expression and Drug Transport

open access: yesFrontiers in Molecular Neuroscience, 2018
Cell culture-based blood-brain barrier (BBB) models are useful tools for screening of CNS drug candidates. Cell sources for BBB models include primary brain endothelial cells or immortalized brain endothelial cell lines.

High-Precision Isotopic Analysis of Cu and Fe via Multi-Collector Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry Reveals Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Inflammatory Effects in Blood Plasma and Brain Tissues

open access: yesFrontiers in Chemistry, 2022
The concentration and the isotopic composition of the redox-active essential elements Cu and Fe were investigated in blood plasma and specific brain regions (hippocampus, cortex, brain stem and cerebellum) of mice to assess potential alterations ...

Zonal Jets as Transport Barriers in Planetary Atmospheres [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The connection between transport barriers and potential vorticity (PV) barriers in PV-conserving flows is investigated with a focus on zonal jets in planetary atmospheres. A perturbed PV-staircase model is used to illustrate important concepts. This flow

Conceptual barriers to understanding physical barriers [PDF]

open access: yesSeminars in Cell & Developmental Biology, 2015
The members of the large family of claudin proteins regulate ion and water flux across the tight junction. Many claudins, e.g. claudins 2 and 15, accomplish this by forming size- and charge-selective paracellular channels. Claudins also appear to be essential for genesis of tight junction strands and recruitment of other proteins to these sites.

COVID-19 Highest Incidence Forecast in Russia Based on Regression Model [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Mathematical, Engineering and Management Sciences, 2020
The authors suggest a simple regression model of COVID-19 highest incidence prognosis in Russia on the basis of the revealed correlation between the duration of coronavirus peak (plateau) and air traffic volume.

Surmounting Oscillating Barriers

open access: yes, 1999
Thermally activated escape over a potential barrier in the presence of periodic driving is considered. By means of novel time-dependent path-integral methods we derive asymptotically exact weak-noise expressions for both the instantaneous and the time ...

Barriers to participation in vocational orientation programmes among prisoners [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
This study investigates the barriers to prisoners’ participation in vocational education, as well as the predictors of different types of barriers. Survey data derived from a project in a remand prison in Belgium (N=468) provided the empirical evidence ...

Lattice QCD without topology barriers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
As the continuum limit is approached, lattice QCD simulations tend to get trapped in the topological charge sectors of field space and may consequently give biased results in practice. We propose to bypass this problem by imposing open (Neumann) boundary

A new type of ultrasonic water alleviates constipation with favorable safety

open access: yesFrontiers in Toxicology
IntroductionUltrasonic water (UW) is a novel category of functional drinking water. This study aimed to investigate its laxative efficacy and underlying mechanisms using a constipation model in SD rats, while also conducting a comprehensive safety ...

Detecting community change in Arctic marine ecosystems using the temporal dynamics of environmental DNA

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, 2021
Large‐scale biomonitoring of Arctic coastal marine communities is essential to track temporal changes in ecosystems. Despite the potential of environmental DNA (eDNA) as an innovative coastal biomonitoring tool, important questions remain pertaining to ...
