An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Thyroid thermogenesis in adult rat hepatocytes in primary monolayer culture: direct action of thyroid hormone in vitro. [PDF]

open access: yes, 1979
We have studied the effect of 3,5,3'-triiodothyronine (T3) on the respiration of adult rat hepatocytes in primary monolayer culture prepared from hypothyroid rat liver. After addition of T3 to the culture medium at a concentration of 2 x 10(-7) M, oxygen

Biodegradation kinetics of monosaccharides and their contribution to basal respiration in tropical forest soils [PDF]

open access: yesSoil Science and Plant Nutrition, 2011
Low molecular weight (LMW) organic compounds in soil solution are easily biodegradable and could fuel respiration by soil microorganisms. Our main aim was to study the mineralization kinetics of monosaccharides using 14C-radiolabelled glucose. Based on these data and the soil solution concentrations of monosaccharides, we evaluated the contribution of ...

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Microbiological characteristics оf cambisols from Western Balkan Mountains (Bulgaria)

open access: yesПочвознание, агрохимия и екология, 2016
Changes in microbial population density and basal soil respiration of Cambisols from Western Balkan Mountains due to the influence of vegetation cover (grassland, pine forest and beech forest) were studied, and their relations with soil properties were ...

Slc2a10 knock-out mice deficient in ascorbic acid synthesis recapitulate aspects of arterial tortuosity syndrome and display mitochondrial respiration defects

open access: yes, 2020
Arterial tortuosity syndrome (ATS) is a recessively inherited connective tissue disorder, mainly characterized by tortuosity and aneurysm formation of the major arteries.

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Aerobic capacity and mitochondrial function in bipolar disorder: a longitudinal study during acute phases and after clinical remission

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychiatry
BackgroundAerobic capacity has shown to predict physical and mental health-related quality of life in bipolar disorder (BD). However, the correlation between exercise respiratory capacity and mitochondrial function remains understudied.

Catechol inhibits FADH2-linked respiration in rat liver mitochondrial fraction Catecol inibe FADH2 ligado à respiração na fração mitochondrial do fígado do rato

open access: yesActa Cirúrgica Brasileira, 2005
PURPOSE: The aim of this work was to investigate the hypothesis that catechol inhibits FADH2-linked basal respiration in mitochondria isolated from rat liver homogenates.

Development of microbial biomass and enzyme activities in mine soils [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
This study assessed the development of microbial biomass, basal respiration, and the activities of dehydrogenase, urease, and acid phosphomonoesterase in sandy mine soils reclaimed for forestry and those developing under vegetation from natural ...
