An Autoinhibited Dimeric Form of BAX Regulates the BAX Activation Pathway [PDF]

open access: yesMolecular Cell, 2016
Pro-apoptotic BAX is a cell fate regulator playing an important role in cellular homeostasis and pathological cell death. BAX is predominantly localized in the cytosol, where it has a quiescent monomer conformation. Following a pro-apoptotic trigger, cytosolic BAX is activated and translocates to the mitochondria to initiate mitochondrial dysfunction ...

The anticancer effect of the HDAC inhibitor belinostat is enhanced by inhibitors of Bcl‐xL or Mcl‐1 in ovarian cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The pan‐HDAC inhibitor belinostat increases the expression of the pro‐apoptotic proteins Bim, Puma, and Noxa and induces apoptosis in ovarian cancer cell lines and patient‐derived tumor organoids when used at high concentrations. Moreover, inhibiting the anti‐apoptotic proteins Bcl‐xL or Mcl‐1 sensitizes these preclinical models to the cytotoxic effect

The impact of frailty syndrome on skeletal muscle histology: preventive effects of exercise

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Frailty syndrome exacerbates skeletal muscle degeneration via increased ECM deposition and myofiber loss. This study, using a murine model, demonstrates that endurance exercise attenuates these histopathological alterations, preserving muscle integrity. Findings support exercise as a viable strategy to counteract frailty‐induced musculoskeletal decline

FEM1B enhances TRAIL‐induced apoptosis in T lymphocytes and monocytes

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
FEM1B facilitates TRAIL‐induced apoptosis through distinct mechanisms in T lymphocytes and monocytes. In T lymphocytes, FEM1B engages with TRAF2, leading to a reduction in TRAF2 expression, which subsequently lessens TRAF2's inhibitory influence on caspase‐8.

Completion of BAX recruitment correlates with mitochondrial fission during apoptosis

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2019
BAX, a member of the BCL2 gene family, controls the committed step of the intrinsic apoptotic program. Mitochondrial fragmentation is a commonly observed feature of apoptosis, which occurs through the process of mitochondrial fission.

Liver‐specific lncRNAs associated with liver cancers

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Long non‐coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are regulatory molecules with various functions. They are more tissue‐specific than proteins and can be used as potential biomarkers, particularly in cancer diagnostics and prognosis. In this review, we have systematically compiled all lncRNAs with exclusive expression in the human liver, verified their liver specificity ...

Effect of aerobic exercise on some factors of cardiac apoptosis in male rats

open access: yesFiyz̤, 2019
Background: Cardiac apoptosisplays an important role in myocardial diseases. Current evidence suggests that exercise training may modify some apoptosis-related signaling in myocardium.

The great migration of Bax and Bak [PDF]

open access: yesMolecular & Cellular Oncology, 2015
The Bcl-2 proteins Bcl-2-associated X protein (Bax) and Bcl-2 antagonist killer 1 (Bak) can commit cells to apoptosis. Retrotranslocation of Bax from the mitochondria into the cytosol is essential for cell survival. Recently, we reported that Bak is also present in the cytosol of healthy cells and that Bax and Bak are regulated by the same ...

Ro 31‐8220 suppresses bladder cancer progression via enhancing autophagy in vitro and in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The pan‐protein kinase C inhibitor Ro‐31‐8220 demonstrates potent anti‐bladder cancer effects both in vitro and in vivo by suppressing migration/invasion, inducing apoptosis and crucially activating autophagy, where blocking autophagy with chloroquine reduces its cell‐killing efficacy, suggesting its promise as a novel therapeutic candidate requiring ...
