Beclin 1 Complex in Autophagy and Alzheimer Disease [PDF]

open access: yesArchives of Neurology, 2010
Beclin 1 is a protein involved in the regulation of autophagy and has been shown to be reduced in patients with Alzheimer disease. This review summarizes the current research data that link disturbances in autophagy, a cellular degradation and maintenance pathway, to the development of Alzheimer disease and related neurodegenerative diseases.

Decreased expression of Beclin 1 correlates closely with Bcl-xL expression and poor prognosis of ovarian carcinoma. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
It has been suggested that autophagy-related Beclin 1 plays a critical role in the regulation of tumor development and/or progression, but its prognostic significance and relationship with Bcl-xL expression in ovarian carcinoma are unclear. In the present

Connexins : substrates and regulators of autophagy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Connexins mediate intercellular communication by assembling into hexameric channel complexes that act as hemichannels and gap junction channels. Most connexins are characterized by a very rapid turn-over in a variety of cell systems.

Genetic and epigenetic silencing of the beclin 1 gene in sporadic breast tumors

open access: yesBMC Cancer, 2010
Background Beclin 1, an important autophagy-related protein in human cells, is involved in cell death and cell survival. Beclin 1 mapped to human chromosome 17q21. It is widely expressed in normal mammary epithelial cells.

Beclin-1 as a neutrophil-specific immune checkpoint [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Investigation, 2019
Neutrophils are early wound healing and inflammation regulators that, due to functional plasticity, can adopt either pro- or antitumor functions. Until recently, beclin-1 was a protein known mainly for its role as a critical regulator of autophagy. In this issue of the JCI, Tan et al.

Hypoxia-Induced Autophagy Is Involved in Radioresistance via HIF1A-Associated Beclin-1 in Glioblastoma Multiforme

open access: yesHeliyon, 2023
Radioresistance is the major factor of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) treatment failure and relapse. Hypoxia and autophagy are linked to radioresistance and poor prognosis in solid tumors, but mechanisms remain unknown.

TRIM50 regulates Beclin 1 proautophagic activity

open access: yesBiochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Molecular Cell Research, 2018
Autophagy is a catabolic process needed for maintaining cell viability and homeostasis in response to numerous stress conditions. Emerging evidence indicates that the ubiquitin system has a major role in this process. TRIMs, an E3 ligase protein family, contribute to selective autophagy acting as receptors and regulators of the autophagy proteins ...

The VMP1-Beclin 1 interaction regulates autophagy induction [PDF]

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2013
The Vacuole Membrane Protein 1 -VMP1- is a pancreatitis-associated transmembrane protein whose expression triggers autophagy in several human diseases. In the current study, we unveil the mechanism through which this protein induces autophagosome formation in mammalian cells.

The Role of Beclin 1-Dependent Autophagy in Cancer

open access: yesBiology, 2019
Autophagy (self-eating) is an intracellular degradation process used by cells to keep a “clean house”; as it degrades abnormal or damaged proteins and organelles, it helps to fight infections and also provides energy in times of fasting or ...

SIRT3 Protects Rotenone-induced Injury in SH-SY5Y Cells by Promoting Autophagy through the LKB1-AMPK-mTOR Pathway. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
SIRT3 is a class III histone deacetylase that modulates energy metabolism, genomic stability and stress resistance. It has been implicated as a potential therapeutic target in a variety of neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson's disease (PD ...
