Bee Pollen (BP) is a mixture of nectar, salivary secretions from bees, and pollen grains collected from the flowers. It contains a wide range of nutrients, including proteins (10-40%), carbohydrates (13-55%), lipids (1-20%), vitamins (0.02-0.1%), minerals (0.5-3%), flavonoids (0.04-3%), and other bioactive substances such as phenolic compounds.

Pyrrolizidine alkaloids in honey and bee pollen
Food Additives & Contaminants: Part A, 2011A total of 3917 honey samples and 119 'bee pollen' samples (pollen collected by honeybees) were analysed for pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs). Some 0.05 M sulphuric acid was used for extraction followed by a clean-up step by means of solid-phase extraction. Separation and detection was achieved by target analysis using an LC-MS/MS system.

Chemical Composition of Bee Pollen
2017Bee pollen is produced by bees as a nutrient source in the hive. Its composition varies according to the region where it is produced and also with the collection and processing conditions. Proteins are the main substances of this product; however, important micronutrients and bioactive compounds are also present.

Insects hold vital roles in ecosystems. Pollinators, parasites, predators, herbivores, and decomposers are just a few examples of typical specialties. This series of photographs represents each of these groups, with an attention to close-up, sometimes even microscopic details that would otherwise go unnoticed.
