Sulfonated para‐Polybenzimidazole Membranes for Use in Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries

Dense sulfonated para‐PBI membranes (MS‐PBI) are tested in the VRFB. The conductivity is 10 times lower than reported for MS‐PBI gel membranes, but 10 times higher than that of meta‐PBI. The influence of membrane preparation process, thickness, and operating temperature on the VRFB performance is investigated.

Sulfonated Polybenzimidazole Membranes: How Sulfonation Affects Properties, Stability, and Performance in Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries

Sulfonation of OPBI increases the electrolyte uptake and thus increases the conductivity. Simultaneously, the more open structure increases access to vanadium ions. However, it appears that sulfonation deactivates the sites which are attacked by VO2+. This allows stable and highly efficient vanadium redox flow batteries.

A molecular cathode incorporating a strategically designed copper‐benzimidazole‐based electrocatalyst was developed for direct CO₂ capture and electrochemical conversion to methanol (e‐MeOH). This system follows a formato pathway, utilizing water as a proton source and thus eliminating the need for H₂ in e‐MeOH production.
