Antimicrotubule properties of benzophenanthridine alkaloids

Biochemistry, 1993
Chelidonine, sanguinarine, and chelerythrine are natural benzophenanthridine alkaloids that inhibit taxol-mediated polymerization of rat brain tubulin in the micromolar range. Chelidonine is a weak, competitive inhibitor of colchicine binding to tubulin but does not inhibit podophyllotoxin binding.

Benzophenanthridine alkaloids from Zanthoxylum rhoifolium

Phytochemistry, 1997
A novel benzophenanthridine alkaloid, named zanthoxyline, was isolated from the bark of Zanthoxylum rhoifolium, together with the known compounds, dihydronitidine, 6-oxynitidine and skimmianine. The structure of the new compound was elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic investigations and elemental analysis.

Uncoupling of photosynthetic phosphorylation by benzophenanthridine alkaloids

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Bioenergetics, 1973
Abstract Sanguinarine, chelerythrine and chelidonine, benzophenanthridine alkaloids, inhibited both photosynthetic phosphorylation associated with ferricyanide reduction and cyclic photophosphorylation catalyzed by phenazine methosulphate. They did not affect electron transport in the presence of ADP and Pi and stimulated it in their absence.
